Translation

✧ Mention of the arrival of ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ from ʿUmān The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ to Jayfar upon his return from the Farewell Pilgrimage. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while ʿAmr was in ʿUmān, so he set out until he reached al-Baḥrayn, and he found al-Mundhir b. Sāwā on the point of death. Then he departed from him to the lands of Banū ʿĀmir and alighted with Qurrah b. Hubayrah, while Qurrah was stepping forward with one foot and backward with the other, and with him was an army from Banū ʿĀmir. He slaughtered for him and honoured his lodging. When he wanted to depart, Qurrah took him aside and said: "O you, the Arabs will not willingly accept tribute from you. If you exempt them from taking their wealth, they will hearken to you and obey; but if you refuse, they will not unite behind you." ʿAmr said to him: "Have you disbelieved, O Qurrah? Do you frighten us with the Arabs? By Allah, I will trample you with cavalry in the hut of your mother." Al-ḥifsh: a house in which a woman in childbed secludes herself. He arrived at Madinah to the Muslims and informed them. They gathered around him asking him, and he told them that the armies were encamped from Dabā to Madinah. So they dispersed and formed circles. ʿUmar came wanting to greet ʿAmr, and he passed by a circle in which were ʿAlī, ʿUthmān, Ṭalḥah, al-Zubayr, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and Saʿd. When ʿUmar drew near them they fell silent. He said: "What are you about?" They did not answer him. He said to them: "You are saying: How fearful we are for Quraysh because of the Arabs!" They said: "You have spoken truly." He said: "Do not fear them. By Allah, I am more fearful for you from the Arabs than I am of the Arabs for you. By Allah, if you, O assembly of Quraysh, were to enter a hole, the Arabs would enter it in your tracks. So fear Allah concerning them." ʿUmar went on. When Qurrah b. Hubayrah was brought to Abū Bakr as a prisoner, he called upon ʿAmr to bear witness to his Islam. Abū Bakr summoned ʿAmr and asked him, and he told him of Qurrah's speech until he reached the mention of zakāt. Qurrah said: "Gently, O ʿAmr!" ʿAmr said: "No, by Allah, I will tell him all of it." Abū Bakr pardoned him and accepted his Islam.
