The caliphate of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ᴿᴬ
[أَوَّلُ اخْتِلَافٍ وَقَعَ بَيْنَ الصَّحَابَةِ] عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ؓ قَالَتْ: لَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ... اشْرَأَبَّ النِّفَاقُ، وَارْتَدَتِ الْعَرَبُ، وَانْحَازَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ، فَلَوْ نَزَلَ بِالْجِبَالِ الرَّاسِيَاتِ مَا نَزَلَ بِأَبِي... لَهَاضَهَا، فَمَا اخْتَلَفُوا فِي نُقْطَةٍ... إِلَّا طَارَ أَبِي بِفَنَائِهَا وَفَصْلِهَا، قَالُوا: أَيْنَ يُدْفَنُ النَّبِيُّ، ﷺ ؟ فَمَا وَجَدْنَا عِنْدَ أَحَدٍ مِنْ ذَلِكَ عِلْمًا، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «مَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ يُقْبَضُ... إِلَّا دُفِنَ تَحْتَ مَضْجَعِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ». قَالَتْ: وَاخْتَلَفُوا فِي مِيرَاثِهِ، فَمَا وَجَدُوا عِنْدَ أَحَدٍ مِنْ ذَلِكَ عِلْمًا، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «إِنَّا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ لَا نُوَرَّثُ، مَا تَرَكْنَا صَدَقَةٌ». قَالَ الْأَصْمَعِيُّ: (الْهَيْضُ: الْكَسْرُ لِلْعَظْمِ، وَاشْرَأَبَّ: رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ). قَالَ بَعْضُ الْعُلَمَاءِ: وَهَذَا أَوَّلُ اخْتِلَافٍ وَقَعَ بَيْنَ الصَّحَابَةِ ؓ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: نَدْفِنُهُ بِمَكَّةَ بَلَدِهِ الَّذِي وُلِدَ بِهَا، وَقَالَ آخَرُونَ: بَلْ بِمَسْجِدِهِ، وَقَالَ آخَرُونَ: بَلْ بِالْبَقِيعِ، وَقَالَ آخَرُونَ: بَلْ بِبَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ مَدْفَنِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ، حَتَّى أَخْبَرَهُمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ بِمَا عِنْدَهُ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ. قَالَ ابْنُ زَنْجُوَيْهِ: (وَهَذِهِ سُنَّةٌ تَفَرَّدَ بِهَا الصِّدِّيقُ مِنْ بَيْنِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ، وَرَجَعُوا إِلَيْهِ فِيهَا).
Translation
✧ [The first disagreement that occurred among the Companions] On the authority of ʿĀʾishah ؓ, she said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ died... hypocrisy raised its head, the Arabs apostatized, and the Anṣār withdrew. Had what befell my father descended upon the firm mountains, it would have crushed them. Yet they did not differ over a single point... except that my father soared with its resolution and judgment. They said: Where is the Prophet ﷺ to be buried? We found no one who had knowledge of that. Then Abū Bakr said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: “No prophet is taken in death... but is buried beneath the place where he died.” She said: And they differed over his inheritance, and they found no one who had knowledge of that. Then Abū Bakr said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: “We, the company of prophets, are not inherited from; what we leave behind is charity.” Al-Aṣmaʿī said: (al-hayḍ means the breaking of a bone, and ishraʾabba means he raised his head). Some scholars said: This is the first disagreement that occurred among the Companions ؓ. Some of them said: We bury him in Makkah, his town where he was born; others said: Rather in his mosque; others said: Rather in al-Baqīʿ; others said: Rather in Jerusalem, the burial place of the prophets—until Abū Bakr informed them of the knowledge he possessed. Ibn Zanjūyah said: (This is a Sunnah with which al-Ṣiddīq was uniquely favored among the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār, and they referred back to him concerning it).
