Translation
✧ Ḥassān’s Poetry in Which He Enumerated the Expeditions Ḥassān b. Thābit said, enumerating the days of the Anṣār with the Prophet ﷺ, and mentioning their stations with him during the days of his expeditions: Ibn Hishām said: It is also related on the authority of his son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān: Am I not the best of all Maʿadd in men and in clan, whether they are made numerous or numbered? A people who all witnessed Badr with the Messenger, and they did not fail or forsake. They pledged allegiance to him, and not one of them broke it, nor was there any defect in their faith. And on the day when they were met at dawn in the mountain pass of Uḥud with a firm blow like the blazing heat of fire. And on the day of Dhū Qarad, the day when he stirred them up against the steeds, and they did not weaken or hold back. And Dhū al-ʿUshayrah—they traversed it with their horses with the Messenger, upon them the white [helmets] and the spearheads. And on the day of Waddān they expelled its people in haste with the horses, until the rugged ground and the mountain stopped us. And on a night when they sought their enemy for God, and God rewards them for what they did. And an expedition on the day of Najd, then they had with the Messenger therein the spoils and the extra shares. And on a night at Ḥunayn they fought with him, he gave them to drink of war when they had already drunk their fill. And the expedition of al-Qāʿ: we scattered the enemy by it as the watering herds are scattered short of the drinking place. And on the day when allegiance was pledged they were the people of his allegiance upon fighting, and they shared with him and did not turn aside. And the expedition of the conquest: they were in his raiding party, keeping watch, and they did not waver or hasten. And on the day of Khaybar they were in his battalion, all walking as heroes who faced death. With white swords trembling in right hands, bare, bending sometimes in the strike and straightening. And on the day the Messenger of God marched, seeking reward, to Tabūk, they were his foremost banners. And the managers of war, if war appeared to them, until advance and return became clear to them. Those are the people, the supporters of the Prophet, and they are my people, to whom I resort when I attain [a connection]. They died nobly, and their covenants were not broken, and their killing was in the path of God when they were killed. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit also said: We were kings of the people before Muḥammad, and when Islam came, excellence was ours. God, besides whom there is no other god, honored us with days that passed that have no likeness, through the help of God and the Messenger and His religion, and we clothed him with a name that passed that has no equal. Those are my people, the best people in their entirety; whatever good is counted, my people are worthy of it. They nurture with kindness the kindness of those who have passed, and there is no lock upon their kindness. When they are sought, they are not obscene in their assembly, and there is no stinginess with them in their giving. And if they fight or make peace, they are not blamed; their war is death and their peace is easy. Their neighbor is fulfilled, his house in high honor; he has, as long as he dwells among us, generosity and giving. And their guarantor fulfills every guarantee he undertakes; there is no loss upon it and no abandonment. And their speaker speaks the truth, if a speaker speaks, and their forbearance is old and their judgment is just. Among us is the Commander of the Muslims during his lifetime, and the one whom the angels washed from his state of impurity. Ibn Hishām said: His statement “and we clothed him with a name” is from other than Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit also said: My people, if you ask, are those— noble when a guest one day arrives. Huge cauldrons for their gamblers; they overturn into them the old hump-backed camel. They share with their neighbor in wealth and protect their client if he is wronged. They were kings in their lands, calling loudly with a command of oppression; kings over people, not possessed for a single day of time like the loosening of an oath. They brought news of ʿĀd and its factions, Thamūd and some remnants of Iram. In Yathrib they built among the palm trees fortresses, and cattle were domesticated therein: water-carrying camels that the Jews had taught to come to you and the word “come here!” And a mouth that they desired from the juice of the wild doves and a life soft without care. Then we traveled to them with our baggage upon every noble, lustful stallion. We drove beside them the excellent horses that they had covered with leather saddle cloths. And when they made their camels kneel at the sides of Ṣirār and tightened the saddles with worn girths, nothing startled them but the galloping of the horses and the advancing from behind them that had already overwhelmed. They fled swiftly, frightened, and we came to them like lions of the thickets, upon every tall, slender she-camel in the midday heat, not complaining of the emaciation of weariness, and every bay horse, swift of heart, sound of pasterns, like the polished spearhead, upon them horsemen who had been accustomed to the clash of champions and the striking of heroes, kings who, when they oppress in the lands, do not hold back but advance. Then we returned with their lords and women, and their children, among whom they were divided. We inherited their dwellings after them, and we were kings in them, not departing. And when the rightly guided Messenger came to us with truth and light after oppression, we said: You have spoken truth, O Messenger of the King; come to us and stay among us, so that we may bear witness that you are the servant of God, sent as a light with a right religion. We and our children are a shield protecting you, and in our wealth command as you will. We are those—if they deny you, then call out a call and do not be ashamed. And call out what you had hidden with a public call and do not conceal. Then the errant ones marched with their swords to him, thinking that he would be cut off. So we rose against them with our swords, fighting for him against the oppressors of the nations, with every polished sword that has a sheen, thin-edged, biting, sharp. When it meets solid bones, it does not turn away from them and does not break. That is what the generations bequeathed to us: ancient glory and lofty might. When a generation passes, its progeny suffices, and it leaves progeny when it is severed. There is no one among the people but that we have over him—even if he acts treacherously—the bounty of blessings. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited to me his verse: They were kings in their lands, calling angrily with a command of oppression. And he recited to me: In Yathrib they built among the palm trees fortresses, and cattle were domesticated therein. And his verse: And every bay horse, swift of heart… : from him.
