Chapter mentioning the offspring of Abraham (peace and blessings be upon him)
Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: He was a man from the Romans—he is Job b. Mūṣā b. Razāḥ b. al-ʿĪṣ b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Khalīl. Others said: He is Job b. Mūṣā b. Raghwīl b. al-ʿĪṣ b. Isḥāq b. Yaʿqūb. And other views were given regarding his lineage. Ibn ʿAsākir related that his mother was the daughter of Lot ﷺ. It was also said: His father was among those who believed in Abraham ﷺ on the day he was cast into the fire and it did not burn him. The well-known view is the first, because he is from the offspring of Abraham, as we established at His saying, exalted be He: "And from his offspring, David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron"—the verses [al-Anʿām: 84]—that the correct view is that the pronoun refers to Abraham, not Noah, peace be upon them both. He is among the prophets explicitly mentioned as receiving revelation in Sūrat al-Nisāʾ in His saying, exalted be He: "We have revealed to you as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him, and We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the tribes, Jesus, and Job" [al-Nisāʾ: 163]—the verse. So the correct view is that he was from the descendants of al-ʿĪṣ b. Isḥāq. His wife, whom he was commanded to strike with a bundle of rushes, was said to be named Layyā bt. Yaʿqūb, and it was also said Raḥmah bt. Afrāʾīm b. Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb, and this is more widely known. Wahb b. Munabbih said: Job lived in the time of Jacob ﷺ, and he had married the daughter of Jacob.
