Chapter mentioning the offspring of Abraham (peace and blessings be upon him)
وَرَوَى ابْنُ عَسَاكِرَ مِنْ طَرِيقِ الْكَلْبِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: أَوَّلُ نَبِيٍّ بُعِثَ إِدْرِيسُ، ثُمَّ نُوحٌ، ثُمَّ إِبْرَاهِيمُ، ثُمَّ إِسْمَاعِيلُ، ثُمَّ إِسْحَاقُ، ثُمَّ يَعْقُوبُ، ثُمَّ يُوسُفُ، ثُمَّ لُوطٌ، ثُمَّ هُودٌ، ثُمَّ صَالِحٌ، ثُمَّ شُعَيْبٌ، ثُمَّ مُوسَى وَهَارُونُ، ثُمَّ إِلْيَاسُ، ثُمَّ الْيَسَعُ، ثُمَّ عُرْفِيُّ بْنُ سَوِيلَخَ بْنِ أَفْرَائِيمَ بْنِ يُوسُفَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ، ثُمَّ يُونُسُ بْنُ مَتَّى مِنْ بَنِي يَعْقُوبَ، ثُمَّ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ رَزَاحَ بْنِ آمُوصَ بْنِ لِيفَرَزَ بْنِ الْعِيصِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَفِي بَعْضِ هَذَا التَّرْتِيبِ نَظَرٌ فَإِنَّ هُودًا وَصَالِحًا الْمَشْهُورُ أَنَّهُمَا بَعْدَ نُوحٍ، وَقَبْلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ. وَبَعْضُهُمْ يَجْعَلُ أَيُّوبَ بَعْدَ سُلَيْمَانَ، وَبَعْضُهُمْ يَقُولُ: هُوَ بَعْدَ يُونُسَ. وَالَّذِي يَقْتَضِيهِ الصَّوَابُ تَقْدِيمُهُ، عَلَى مَا قَدِ اخْتَرْنَا. وَنَبِيُّنَا أَيُّوبُ فِي زَمَنِ يَعْقُوبَ، وكَانَ دِينُهُ التَّوْحِيدَ وَالْإِصْلَاحَ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ، وَإِذَا أَرَادَ حَاجَةً سَجَدَ ثُمَّ طَلَبَهَا.
Translation
✧ Ibn ʿAsākir related by way of al-Kalbī that he said: The first prophet sent was Idrīs, then Nūḥ, then Ibrāhīm, then Ismāʿīl, then Isḥāq, then Yaʿqūb, then Yūsuf, then Lūṭ, then Hūd, then Ṣāliḥ, then Shuʿayb, then Mūsā and Hārūn, then Ilyās, then al-Yasaʿ, then ʿUrfī b. Sawīlakh b. Afrāʾīm b. Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb, then Yūnus b. Mattā from the Banū Yaʿqūb, then Ayyūb b. Razāḥ b. Āmūṣ b. Līfaraz b. al-ʿĪṣ b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm. In some of this ordering there is room for scrutiny, for Hūd and Ṣāliḥ are well known to have come after Nūḥ and before Ibrāhīm, and Allah knows best. Some place Ayyūb after Sulaymān, and some say he came after Yūnus. What sound reasoning requires is to give him precedence, as we have chosen. Our prophet Ayyūb lived in the time of Yaʿqūb, and his religion was monotheism and setting matters right among the people. When he wanted something, he prostrated and then asked for it.
