Translation

✧ The description of his ﷺ shroud Al-Bukhārī and Muslim and al-Bayhaqī narrated from ʿĀʾishah ؓ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in three white Yemeni cotton garments from Kursuf, with no shirt and no turban among them. Ibn Mājah narrated it and added: It was said to ʿĀʾishah: “They used to claim that he had been shrouded in a striped Yemeni cloak (ḥibarah).” She said: “They brought a striped cloak (burd ḥibarah), but they did not shroud him in it.” In a narration by al-Bukhārī and Muslim and Abū Dāwūd: “And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wrapped in a Yemeni suit (ḥullah) that belonged to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Bakr, then it was removed from him, and he was shrouded in three white Yemeni cotton garments with no shirt and no turban among them.” In another narration by the two of them: “As for the suit, the people were confused about it, whether it had been bought for him to be shrouded in, so the suit was left and he was shrouded in three white Yemeni cotton garments. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr took it and said: ‘Keep it until I am shrouded in it.’ Then he said: ‘If Allah Almighty had been pleased with it for His Prophet ﷺ, He would have shrouded him in it.’ So he sold it and gave its price in charity.” Ibn Abī Shaybah narrated with a chain that includes ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAqīl, from Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, from his father ؓ, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in seven garments. . Al-Bazzār narrated with the men of the Ṣaḥīḥ from Abū Hurayrah ؓ who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in two thin white cloaks (rīṭatayn) and a Najrānī striped cloak (burd).” Al-Ṭabarānī narrated with a good chain from Anas ؓ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in three garments, one of which was a shirt. Ibn Saʿd and al-Bayhaqī narrated from al-Shaʿbī who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in three thick Yemeni cotton garments: a waist-wrapper (izār), an upper garment (ridāʾ), and a wrapping sheet (lifāfah).” Imām Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, and Ibn Mājah narrated with a weak chain from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in three garments: the shirt in which he died and a Najrānī suit (ḥullah). It was narrated from him that he said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in two white garments and a red striped cloak (burd).” Ibn Saʿd narrated through authentic paths from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in two thin white cloaks and a Najrānī striped cloak.” ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated from Maʿmar from Hishām b. ʿUrwah who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wrapped in a striped Yemeni cloak (burd ḥibarah) that was placed on him, then it was removed from him.” Notes First: Al-Tirmidhī said: “His ﷺ shrouding in three white garments is the most correct of what has been narrated about his shroud.” Second: The statement of the noble lady ʿĀʾishah ؓ: “with no shirt and no turban among them” means that he was not shrouded in a shirt or a turban; rather, he was shrouded in three garments, and nothing else was added to the three. This is how al-Shāfiʿī and the majority of scholars interpreted it, and it is the correct view required by the apparent meaning of her ḥadīth. Others interpreted it to mean that the shirt and the turban were not among the three garments, but rather additional to them. Third: The reason for the confusion that occurred among the people regarding the shroud of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as mentioned earlier, is that he bought the striped cloak (burd ḥibarah), then it was set aside from him and left.
