The story of the portico of Banū Sāʿidah and the pledge of allegiance to Abū Bakr as caliph
Translation
✧ The affair of the portico of Banū Sāʿidah [The scattering of the word] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ was taken in death, this quarter of the Anṣār withdrew to Saʿd b. ʿUbādah in the portico of Banū Sāʿidah, while ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām, and Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh kept apart in the house of Fāṭimah, and the rest of the Emigrants withdrew to Abū Bakr, and Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr withdrew with them among the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal. The Anṣār gathered in the portico of Banū Sāʿidah and brought out Saʿd b. ʿUbādah to entrust the affair to him, and he was ill. After praising God he said: O company of the Anṣār, you have a precedence and a virtue that no one among the Arabs has. Muḥammad ﷺ remained among his people for ten-odd years calling them, but none believed except a few. They were not able to protect him, nor to strengthen his religion, nor to repel an injustice, until, when He willed for you the virtue, He drove honor to you and granted you faith in Him and in His Messenger, protection for him and for his companions, strengthening for him and for his religion, and striving against his enemies. You were the severest of people against his enemy until the Arabs submitted to God's command willingly or unwillingly, and the distant one gave obedience abased, and the Arabs were brought under his Messenger's authority by your swords. God took him while He was pleased with him and comforted. So keep this affair to yourselves to the exclusion of the people, for it is yours rather than theirs. They answered him all together: You have been granted success and have hit upon the right opinion. We shall entrust you with this affair, for you are sufficient and pleasing to the believers. Then they exchanged words among themselves and said: And what if the Emigrants of Quraysh refuse, and they say: We are the Emigrants and his first companions, his kinsmen and his close allies?! A group of them said: Then we say: From us an amīr and from you an amīr, and we shall never be content with less than this. Saʿd said: This is the first weakness.
