The story of the portico of Banū Sāʿidah and the pledge of allegiance to Abū Bakr as caliph
قِصَّةُ سَقِيفَةِ بَنِي سَاعِدَةَ وَبَيْعَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ بِالْخِلَافَةِ بَعْدَ وَفَاةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَبَيْنَمَا الْمُسْلِمُونَ وَفِيهِمْ كِبَارُ الصَّحَابَةِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ مُنْشَغِلِينَ بِمَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ جَاءَهُمُ الْخَبَرُ بِاجْتِمَاعِ الْأَنْصَارِ فِي سَقِيفَةِ بَنِي سَاعِدَةَ لِلنَّظَرِ فِي مَنْ يَخْلُفُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَهَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ إِلَيْهِمْ، وَتَشَاوَرَا مَعَهُمْ حَوْلَ مَنْ يَكُونُ خَلِيفَةَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، حَتَّى اسْتَقَرَّ الْأَمْرُ عَلَى تَوْلِيَةِ الصِّدِّيقِ بَعْدَمَا تَكَلَّمَ فِيهِمْ فَلَمْ يَتْرُكْ فَضْلًا لِلْأَنْصَارِ إِلَّا وَذَكَرَهُ كَمَا ذَكَّرَهُمْ بِأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَصَّ عَلَى أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ فِي قُرَيْشٍ وَالنَّاسُ تَبَعٌ لَهُمْ فِيهِ.
Translation
✧ The story of the portico of Banū Sāʿidah and the pledge of allegiance to Abū Bakr as caliph After the death of the Prophet ﷺ, while the Muslims—among them the senior Companions Abū Bakr and ʿUmar—were preoccupied with the death of the Prophet ﷺ, news came to them that the Anṣār had gathered in the portico of Banū Sāʿidah to consider who should succeed the Prophet ﷺ. So Abū Bakr and ʿUmar went to them and conferred with them about who should be the successor of the Prophet ﷺ, until the matter settled on appointing al-Ṣiddīq after he spoke among them and did not leave any virtue of the Anṣār without mentioning it, and he reminded them that the Prophet ﷺ had stated that this matter belongs to Quraysh and that the people follow them in it.
