The illness of the Prophet ﷺ and his death

Ibn Isḥāq and others have mentioned odes by Ḥassān b. Thābit ؓ on the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and among the most exalted, most eloquent, and greatest of them is what ʿAbd al-Malik b. Hishām, may Allah have mercy on him, related from Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī, that Ḥassān b. Thābit ؓ said, weeping for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: In Ṭaybah there is a trace of the Messenger and a shining place of worship, though traces may be effaced and crumble. And the signs are not erased from a sacred dwelling wherein is the pulpit of the guide, which he used to ascend. And clear signs and remaining landmarks, and a quarter in which he had a place of prayer and a mosque. In it are chambers in whose midst he used to alight; from Allah there is a light by which one seeks illumination and which is kindled. Landmarks whose signs have not been effaced with the passing of time; Decay came to them, yet their signs are renewed. I recognized therein the trace of the Messenger and his covenant, and a grave in the earth where a niche concealed him. I remained there weeping for the Messenger, and eyes assisted me, and the like of them from the eyelids assists. They recall the blessings of the Messenger, and I do not see anyone who can count them; my soul is bewildered. A grief-stricken one, whom the loss of Aḥmad has emaciated, so she continued enumerating the blessings of the Messenger. She has not attained a tenth of every matter, but for my soul there is still what she finds of sorrow. She prolonged her standing, the eye pouring forth its utmost effort upon the ruined remains of the grave in which Aḥmad lies. Blessed are you, O grave of the Messenger, and blessed are the lands in which the rightly-guided, rightly-directed one reposed. And blessed is a niche from you that has enclosed one pure, over whom is a structure of fitted slabs. Hands and eyes heap the dust upon him, and eyes have sunk in sorrow because of that. They buried forbearance, knowledge, and mercy on the evening they raised the soil over him, without a pillow. And they departed in grief, their Prophet not among them, and backs and upper arms among them had grown weak. They weep for one for whom the heavens weep on his day, and one for whom the earth has wept; so the people are most sorrowful. Has the calamity of any perished one ever equaled the calamity of the day on which Muḥammad died? In it the place of revelation's descent was cut off from them, though it had been a light that sets and rises. He guides to the Merciful whoever follows his example, and saves from the terror of shames and directs aright. An imam for them, guiding them to the truth, striving, a teacher of truth; if they obey him, they will be happy. Forgiving of slips, accepting their excuse, and if they do good, Allah is more generous with good. And if a matter befalls them that they cannot bear, from him comes easing of what is difficult. While they were in the blessing of Allah, among them a guide by whom the path of the way was sought. It grieves him that they should deviate from guidance, eager that they should remain upright and be guided. Kind to them, he does not fold his wing toward any refuge, bending over them and smoothing the way. While they were in that light, there came to their light an arrow of death that strikes home. So he became praised, returning to Allah, the due of the messengers weeping for him and praising him. And the lands of the sanctuary became desolate, their open grounds because of the absence of what they had known of revelation. Empty except for the inhabited niche; a lost one visited it for whom the courtyard and the gharqad weep. And his mosque, for the desolate places weep for his loss, empty, though in it is his standing place and his seat. And at the greatest Jamrah, desolate because of him are dwellings and open spaces and a quarter and a birthplace. So weep for the Messenger of Allah, O eye, with a tear, and may I never know you, time, with your tears frozen. And what is wrong with you that you do not weep for the possessor of that blessing whose abundant grace overspreads the people and covers them? So be generous with tears for him and wail for the loss of one whose like time will never bring forth. Those who have passed did not lose one like Muḥammad, nor will his like be lost until the Resurrection. More decent and more faithful to covenant after covenant, and nearer than him in giving that is never begrudged. And more giving of the new and the old when a generous one is miserly with what he has inherited. And more noble in mention among the houses when he traced his lineage, and more noble in ancestry, an Abṭaḥī who is made lord. And more protective of summits and more firmly established in the heights, pillars of towering might that are built up. And more firmly rooted in branches of lineage and in origin, and a wood that the rain clouds nourished, so the wood is supple. A Lord, praised, raised him as a child, and his perfection was completed upon the noblest of good things. The counsels of the Muslims ended with his hand, so knowledge is not withheld and opinion is not deemed weak. I say, and no one who finds fault with what I say among the people except one remote in speech and far away. And my desire does not turn away from praising him, so that perhaps by it I may abide forever in the Garden of Eternity. With the Chosen One I hope thereby for his neighborhood, and in attaining that day I strive and exert myself. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Qāsim al-Suhaylī said at the end of his book "al-Rawḍ": Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, weeping for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: I was sleepless, and my night passed without departing, while the night of a brother of affliction is long. And weeping assisted me, yet that is little compared to what the Muslims were afflicted with. Our calamity was great and mighty on the evening it was said that the Messenger had been taken. And our earth, because of what befell it, became such that its sides almost tilt with us. We lost the revelation and the sending down among us, which Gabriel used to bring evening and morning. That is more deserving of what the souls of people flowed for, or were anguished to flow. A Prophet who used to dispel doubt from us by what was revealed to him and what he said, and he guided us, so we fear no misguidance upon us while the Messenger is our guide. O Fāṭimah, if you grieve, that is an excuse; and if you do not grieve, that is the way. Your father's grave is the master of every grave, and in it is the master of the people, the Messenger. The dirge of Ḥassān b. Thābit Al-Sukkarī related from Ibn Ḥabīb that Ḥassān said, elegizing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with these verses: What is the matter with my eye that it does not sleep, as though its inner corners were anointed with the kohl of the bleary-eyed? In grief for the rightly-guided one who has come to rest in the earth. O best of those who have trodden the pebbles, do not perish! My side shields you from the dust; alas, would that I had been hidden before you in Baqīʿ al-Gharqad. Shall I remain after you in Madinah among them? O grief of my soul, would that I had never been born! May my father and mother be ransom for one whose death I witnessed on Monday, the Prophet, the guided one. So after his death I remained bewildered, would that I had been given to drink the venom of the black snake! O firstborn of Āminah, blessed is his mention, a chaste woman gave birth to you with the felicity of the most felicitous. A light that shone upon all creation; whoever is guided to the blessed light is rightly guided. By Allah, as long as I live I hear of no one who perishes but that I weep for the Prophet Muḥammad. May Allah bless, and those who surround His Throne, and the pure ones, the Prophet Muḥammad. He also said: Your women have become idle in the houses, so they no longer strike above the back of a curtain with tent pegs. Like nuns, wearing haircloth, and they have become certain of misery after the manifest blessing. . Has the calamity of any perished one ever equaled the calamity of the day on which Muḥammad died? By Allah, what a calamity it was that burned the livers and overwhelmed sons and fathers with grief and sorrow. A heavy burden upon the shoulder of faith, from which it destroyed, and a mighty affliction that brought an end to every beautiful thing or nearly did. Some of the Anṣār recited at his death ﷺ: Patience is praiseworthy in all calamities, except for you, for then it is blameworthy. Were it not that Allah, glorified and exalted be He, bound the hearts after him by a command from Him, it would have left in their place burning grief, and I would have found no borrowed time for remaining, nor any refuge from the revelation of sufficiency. Abū al-Fatḥ said: What an affliction it was, greater than all afflictions, and how can the tears of the eye pour down for such a calamity? And a calamity for which I consoled the fires, whose risings and settings are not consoled. The onslaught of death was generous, and no fugitive escaped from it, nor was there any flight from it for the sought one. It has no morning, so its encompassing darknesses and its pitch-black glooms are not dispelled, and every night, if a morning is hoped for, returns. And from the evil of the people of the earth, then Anas wept; he wept with eyes whose excess and hearts—so indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return. From a fire over which the ribs leaned, and it does not die down and is not extinguished. And a calamity from which the ears become deaf, so one does not weep over the passing of the new, for its grief is renewed. Has the calamity of any perished one ever equaled the calamity of the day on which Muḥammad died? Those who have passed did not lose one like Muḥammad, nor will his like be lost until the Resurrection. Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ said, as mentioned by Ibn Saʿd, elegizing him ﷺ: By your grandfather, what is the matter with your eye that it does not sleep, as though its eyelids had words in them? Because of a calamity that was great and mighty, so the least of the eye's tears is its pouring forth. We were bereaved of the Prophet, and among us he was our foremost, our master, the imam. He was our support and the head among us, so today we have no support. We wail and complain of what we have met, and the sacred land complains of his loss. It is as though our noses met with amputation for the loss of Muḥammad; in them is severance. For the loss of a bright, fair Hāshimite, an imam of prophethood, with whom the seal was completed. Trustworthy, chosen, calling to good, like the light of the full moon from which darkness has departed. I will follow his guidance as long as I live, throughout time as long as the dove coos. It is as though the earth after you flew away, so its inhabitants were set ablaze by a fire. And the loss of revelation when you turned away from us and we bade farewell to the speech from Allah. Except that you left us a lamp which the noble pages conceal. You have bequeathed us a mirror of truth; upon you be greeting and peace. From the Merciful in the highest gardens of Paradise, where the abode is good. The companion of your father Abraham therein, and there is no regret in the like of his company. And Isaac and Ishmael therein, for what they prayed to their Lord and fasted. He also said ؓ, may Allah have mercy on him: O eye, weep and do not tire, for weeping for the master is due! For the best of Khindif in times of trial, who has come to be hidden in the niche. May the King, the Guardian of the servants, and Lord of the lands bless Aḥmad. How can life be after the loss of the beloved, the ornament of assemblies in the gathering? Would that death were for all of us, and that we were all with the guided one! Abū Bakr ؓ said, as mentioned by Ibn Saʿd: When I saw our Prophet laid low, the houses with their breadth became narrow for me. I was startled with the startle of a bewildered, distracted one, and my bone is weak and broken. Abū Quḥāfah's son, woe to you! Your love has come to rest, and you remain alone and weary. Would that before the death of my companion I had been hidden in a grave over which rocks are placed! After him there will occur strange things, which hearts and chests will be too weak to bear. Abū Bakr also said, as mentioned by Ibn Saʿd: Cares came to me at night, returning like gathered rocks, so they demolished the body. Would that when I was told in the morning, they said: The Messenger has become dead and is lost. Would that the Resurrection had come after his death, and that we would never see after him wealth or children! By Allah, I praise something by which I was bereaved of all creation until I enter the grave. How many cares after you distress me, when I remember that I will never see you again! He was the purest in character, as they knew, and in chastity, so we did not equate anyone with him. May my soul be ransom for you, from one dead and from a body! How good the remembrance and character and body! ʿAbdullāh b. Unays ؓ said, as mentioned by Ibn Saʿd: My night grew long, and calamities came to me, and a mighty affliction that combines every misfortune! In the morning when the warner announced to us Muḥammad's death, and that is the one from which the ears become deaf. If killing myself could return a dead one, I would kill myself! But no one can repel death. So I swore not to lament the death of any perished one among the people, as long as Thabīr and Fāriʿ remain. But I weep for him and follow his calamity. Indeed to Allah I return! Allah had taken the prophets before him, and ʿĀd were afflicted with calamities, and the Tubbaʿs. Would that I knew who will undertake our affair, and is there among Quraysh an imam who contends? Three men of Quraysh, they are the ones, the reins of this affair, and Allah is the doer. ʿAlī, or al-Ṣiddīq, or ʿUmar are for it, and there is no fourth after the three! If someone among us says other than this, we refuse, and we say: Allah sees and hears. O Quraysh, entrust the affair to some of them, for sound speech is beneficial to the people. Do not delay over it even for the blink of an eye, for if it is severed, no hopes will be attached to it. Ḥassān b. Thābit ؓ said, as mentioned by Ibn Saʿd: O eye, be generous with flowing tears! And do not tire of pouring and wailing! Let not your tears cease after today, for I am afflicted and I am not forgetful. For your withholding from me after your giving is like one who is deceived by a mirage! But pour upon my chest with fourfold abundance, for within the ribs there is a burning whisper. Like the pouring of the stream and the water of the bucket, which a water-carrier gives, and another water-carrier carries it in turns. A protector of the truth, one who drives away hardship, a redeemer of captives, noble, glorious, exalted. For a Messenger to us, whose nature is pure, generous in character, chaste, not unknown! A dispeller of need, a feeder in famine, a giver of captives, and a swift, tall camel! Chaste in his earnings, abundant in his gifts, the best of creation, generous, not a punisher! One who kindles the fire and leads the steeds on the day of battle, when they are kindled with wood. I do not praise over the Merciful any human, but your knowledge is with the One, the Exalted! I see time and the days bereaving me of the righteous, while I remain at ease! O eye, weep for the Messenger of Allah when the essence of the Deity is remembered, for excellent is the leader, the guardian! He said, as mentioned by Ibn Saʿd ؓ: O eye, weep with copious tears for the best of creation and the Chosen One! And weep for the Messenger! For weeping is due upon him, in the heat of battle, at the meeting! For the best of those a she-camel has carried, and the most God-fearing of creation in piety. For a master, glorious, with a mighty host, and the best of mankind and the best of minds! He has a lineage above all lineages, from Hāshim, that hoped-for one. We are singled out by his excellence, and he was a lamp for us in the darkness! He was a bearer of good tidings and a warner to us, and a light for us whose radiance shone. So Allah saved us through his light, and delivered us by His mercy from the flames! ʿĀtikah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ؓ said: My two eyes, be generous throughout time and pour forth, with copious, abundant tears, without reproach! O eye, flow with tears and take care until death with an unceasing bucket! O eye, pour down tears and strive for the Chosen One, apart from all creation, with the light. With a downpour from the rain cloud, flowing, for I have been bereaved of the Prophet of justice and goodness! I was wary, fearful of death, and of what was decreed among those fates! Of the loss of one bright, of ample character, of pride, pure of fault, of defects, and of falsehood! So go praised! May Allah reward you with forgiveness, on the Day of Resurrection, at the blowing of the trumpet. Ḥassān b. Thābit ؓ said, as mentioned by Ibn Isḥāq: At Taybah is a trace of the Messenger and a radiant place of standing, though traces may be effaced and grow old. The signs are not erased from a sacred abode, where stands the pulpit of the Guide who used to ascend it, And clear traces and remaining landmarks, and a dwelling wherein he had a prayer-place and a mosque. In it are chambers where he used to alight, in their midst from God a light by which one seeks illumination and which is kindled. Landmarks whose signs were not obliterated over time; decay came to them, yet their signs are renewed. I recognized there the trace of the Messenger and his covenant, and a grave wherein a side-niche in the earth concealed him. I lingered there weeping for the Messenger, and eyes assisted me, and the like of them from the eyelid brings good fortune. They remind of the blessings of the Messenger, and I see no one who can count them; my soul itself is bewildered. A bereaved woman whom the loss of Ahmad has emaciated; she remained recounting the blessings of the Messenger. She has not reached a tenth of every matter, but for my soul after what she has felt. She prolonged her standing, the eye shedding its utmost tears over the ruins of the grave in which Ahmad lies. Blessed are you, O grave of the Messenger, and blessed are the lands wherein the rightly-guided, divinely-directed one rests. And blessed is a side-niche from you that enfolded a pure one, over which is a structure of layered stone slabs. Hands pour earth upon it, and eyes upon him, yet Saʿd has been submerged by that. They concealed forbearance, knowledge, and mercy on the evening they heaped the earth over him, not laid on a pillow. They departed in grief, among them no sleeper, their backs and forearms weakened. They weep for one for whom the heavens weep on his day, and for whom the earth has wept; mankind is more sorrowful. And has the calamity of any perishing one ever equaled the calamity of the day Muhammad died? Therein the abode of revelation was cut off from them, though it had possessed a light that sank low and rose high. He guided to the Merciful, one who is followed, and rescued from the terror of disgraces and directed aright. A leader for them, guiding them to truth in struggle, a teacher of truth; if they obey him they prosper. Forgiving of slips, accepting their excuse; and if they do good, God is more generous with good. And if a matter befell that they could not bear, from him came facilitation of what was difficult. While they were in the blessing of God, among them a guide by whom the path of the way was sought. Grievous to him that they should deviate from guidance, eager that they remain upright and guided. Compassionate toward them, he does not turn his wing to any shelter, bending over them and smoothing the way. While they were in that light, suddenly there came to their light an arrow of death aimed. He returned to God praiseworthy, wept for by the right of the sent ones, and praising. The lands of the Sanctuary became desolate in their grounds because of the absence of what they had known of revelation. Empty wastes except for the inhabited side-niche, which a lost one attended—one whom a paved court and boxthorn weep for— And his mosque, for the desolate places are bereft of him; empty for him is a standing-place and a seat therein. And by the Great Jamrah his dwellings, courtyards, quarters, and birthplace became desolate. So weep for the Messenger of God, O eye, with tears, and let me not know you, O time, as one whose tears freeze. What is wrong with you that you do not weep for the possessor of that blessing whose ample shade covers the people? So be generous with tears for him and lament for the loss of one whose like time will never produce. Those who have passed away lost no one like Muhammad, nor will they lose his like until the Resurrection— More chaste and more faithful to covenants, one after another, and nearer than him in ungrudging gift. And more liberal than him with the newly acquired and the inherited when a lavish giver was stingy with what he had long possessed. And more noble in reputation among the houses when he traced his lineage, and more noble in ancestry—an Abṭaḥī who is made a chief. And more protective of summits and firmer in the heights, pillars of mighty glory raised high. And firmer of branch among the branches and of origin, and a wood nourished by rain-clouds, so the wood is supple. A Lord reared him as a child, and his perfection was completed upon the noblest of good things—a praised Lord. The counsel of the Muslims reached its utmost in his hand; neither knowledge was withheld nor opinion deemed feeble. I speak, and no one who faults my saying is found among the people except one devoid of intellect and astray. My desire is not diverted from praising him, that perchance through him I may abide in the Garden of Eternity. With the Chosen One I hope for his neighborhood, and in attaining that day I strive and endeavor. And he said ؓ: The poor have announced that good has parted from them; with the Prophet it turned away from them at dawn. Who is there who has my saddle and my riding-camel, and the sustenance of my family, when they no longer see the rain? Or whom shall we reproach without fearing his calamities, when the tongue grows insolent in speech or stumbles? He was the radiance and he was the light we followed after God, and he was the hearing and the sight. Would that on the day they buried him in a side-niche and concealed him and cast clods above him, God had not left any of us after him, and that no female or male had lived after him. The necks of the Banū al-Najjār all became abased, and it was a matter of God's decree that had been ordained. The spoils were divided apart from all the people, and they squandered them openly among themselves in vain. And Ḥassān b. Thābit said, weeping for the Messenger of God ﷺ also: I have sworn, striving among all people, an oath of piety without folly: By God, no female has carried or given birth to the like of the Messenger, the Prophet of the community, the guide. Nor has God created any creature from His creation more faithful to a neighbor's covenant or to an appointment— Who was it among us by whom one sought light, blessed in affair, possessing justice and guidance? Your women have left the houses idle, no longer beating above the back of a curtain with tent-pegs, Like nuns wearing coarse garments, certain of misery after the evident blessing. O best of people, I was in a flowing stream; I have become from it like the solitary, thirsty one. And he also said ؓ: Indeed the calamity—there is no calamity like it—is a dead man at Taybah whose like has not been lost. All his community has been afflicted by him, whoever was born and whoever was not yet born. All people, with all that weighs upon them, hope for his intercession at that witnessed gathering, Even the Friend, his father, among his followers, and his confidant Moses, the rightly-guided Prophet, Humbling themselves before their Lord with their necks—that is the excellence, and the gathering of sovereignty. O best of those toward whom a delegation drives its mount, going and coming for his need: You are the one who rescued us from a pit into which whoever falls, because of his passion, goes far astray. You guided us after error and ruin, by the guidance of God, to the most upright path. May God reward you on our behalf with the best of His reward, in a praiseworthy station, rightly directed. And ʿĀtikah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said ؓ: O eye, be generous—as long as you remain—with tears, pouring copiously for the best of creation, Ahmad. O eye, be attentive, pour forth, and shed tears, and weep for the light of the lands, Muhammad! How—woe to you!—can there be anyone like Muhammad in every calamity that befalls and every witnessed scene? Weep for the blessed, the assisted, possessor of piety, protector of the truth, possessor of right guidance, the guide. Who will release the fettered one from his shackles after his departure into the side-niched tomb? Or who is there for every repelled one in need, and for every chained one complaining of the iron, in fetters? Or who is there for the revelation of God to be left among us at every evening, by night or on the morrow? Upon you be the mercy of our Lord and His peace, O possessor of bounties, generosity, and sovereignty. Would that every accursed, ill-natured, base-stocked one had ransomed you from death! And she also said ؓ: Let my two eyes be generous with streaming tears for the Chosen One, the light of the house of Hāshim— For the Chosen One with truth and light and guidance, and with right direction after the great lamented calamities. And pour for him and weep, as long as you weep, for the one approved for the decisive firm resolutions— For the one approved for piety, justice, and godliness, and for religion and Islam after the injustices— For the pure, blessed one, possessor of forbearance and generosity, possessor of excellence, the summoner to the best of mutual compassion. O my two eyes, what—after you have been bereaved of him—will you weep for, for all time, among the children of Adam? So be generous with a full bucket and lament every rising sun—the spring of the orphans in the years of famine! And Arwā bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said ؓ: O eye, woe to you! Help me with your tears as long as you remain, and obey me! O eye, woe to you! Shed tears for the light of the lands and help me! If a reproacher reproaches you, say: For what and why, woe to you, do you reproach me? For the light of the lands together—the Messenger of God, Ahmad—so leave me! If you do not desist from reproaching me, then blame me as much as seems fit to you, or leave me! For a matter that has broken me and humbled my pillar, and turned my locks gray after their blackness! And she also said ؓ: O Messenger of God, you were our hope, and you were kind to us and were not harsh! You were compassionate, merciful to us, our Prophet; let whoever was weeping weep for you today! By your life, I do not weep for the Prophet because of his death, but for the turmoil that came after you. It is as if on my heart, at the mention of Muhammad—and what I feared after the Prophet—are branding-irons. O Fāṭimah, may God, the Lord of Muhammad, bless a grave that has come to rest at Yathrib! O Abū Ḥasan, she departed from him and you left him; so weep with sorrow to the end of time, grieving! May my mother be ransom for the Messenger of God, and my maternal aunt, my paternal uncle, my soul, and then my maternal uncle! You were patient and delivered the message truthfully, and you stood as a steadfast pillar of religion, radiant and pure. If the Lord of mankind had kept you among us, we would have been happy, but our affair was already decreed! Upon you be peace from God as a greeting, and may you be admitted into gardens of Eden, contented! And Kaʿb b. Mālik said ؓ: And a weeping woman, burning with grief, sorrowing with weeping, striking her cheek and necklace, For one who perished after the Prophet Muhammad—though if she knew, she would weep for none but Muhammad. We were bereaved of the best of people alive and dead, and the nearest of them in station to the Lord of creation, The most grievous of them in loss to every Muslim, and the greatest of them in beneficence among all people. His character inherited glory and piety, and you found him only rightly guided and a guide. And Ṣafiyyah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said ؓ: Alas for my soul! I spent the night like one robbed, sleepless in the night like one despoiled, From griefs and regret that overtook me; would that I had quenched them with death! When they said: The Messenger has passed away, the decreed fate has met him! When we saw the Prophet struck down, the hair of the nape turned gray—what graying! When we saw his houses desolate, with no life in them after him, my beloved! That left the heart with long sorrow that mingled with the heart, so it is like one terrified. Would that I knew how I can be well after the departure of the near Messenger? The greatest of people in right among creation, the master of people, his love is in the hearts. To God I complain of that, and He suffices me; God knows my sin and my weeping! And she also said ؓ: O Fāṭimah, weep and do not weary, from your morning as long as the star rises! He is the man for whom one weeps, and weeping is due! He is the glorious, the master, the good one! The earth has become desolate from his loss, and which of creation is not afflicted? So what remains for me after you until death but the inward, exhausting burning? Weep for the Messenger! And due for him are the witnesses of Madinah and the absent ones! Let a gray-haired, afflicted old woman weep for you, who when the people are veiled is not veiled. Let an old man, father of children, weep for you, around whose courtyard a gray horse circles. And let a caravan weep for you when they are bereft and find not what the seekers sought. And the valleys weep for his loss, and Makkah and al-Akhshab weep for him, And ʿAyrah weeps for his loss in grief, and al-Mīthab assists her! O my eye, what is wrong with you that you do not shed tears? For your tears it is right to be poured forth! And Ṣafiyyah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said ؓ: Why do my two eyes not flow freely with tears, since we have lost the best of creation alive? On the day Bilāl called to prayer, we wept at the call for a long while. I found no choking grief before it, and I shall never meet after it a more bitter choking grief. Great is the day on which I became sick, when no answer returns from you to me. Would that my day before you had been a day that seared the heart with the heat of cautery! A lofty character, a noble religion, and a straight path to which one is guided, A lamp that dispels darkness, shining, and a rightly-directed Arab prophet, Firm, resolute, forbearing, generous, returning with gifts, kind and God-fearing. Indeed the day that came upon you is a day whose sun was folded up, though it had been clear. So upon you be peace from us and from your Lord, with the spirit, morning and evening. And Hind bt. Athāthah b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said ؓ: [Your weeping, O Fāṭimah, for the lost dead one has turned my forelock gray and humbled my pillar. You gave gifts and did not make them turbid, and you served the slave-girls and the slaves. You were our refuge in every distress, when a cold northerly wind blew.] Indeed you are the best of those who have ridden mounts, and the noblest of them when they trace their ancestors! [The Messenger of God has parted from us, and we had hoped that we would have immortality.] O Fāṭimah, be patient, for your calamity has struck the lowlands and the highlands, And all the people of land and sea; his affliction has not missed a single one. Good used to rise in his heights—fortunate of fortune, he begot the fortunate! Then die, if you are able to die; I have lost the good, praiseworthy man. The Messenger of God is truly the best of people; I shall never see another like him for all time. And ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said ؓ: I kept expecting, since he laid the bed beside him and lay ill, in fear, In compassion for him, that his place might depart from us, and we would remain after him in pain. May my soul be your ransom! Who is there for us in our affair? Or whom shall we consult, that he may return? And when events are spoken of, who is there for us with revelation from a merciful Lord who hears? Would that the sky's sides had split apart and the rising stars had been scattered, When I saw the people—all of them—shaken by a voice calling out the death-announcement, and it is heard. I had heard a voice before that which shook me: ʿAbbās announcing his death with a voice that breaks off. Let the people of all the cities weep for him, and the Muslims in every land, with ears cut off. And ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib said ؓ: The announcer of death came by night and startled me, and made me sleepless when he raised his voice as a crier. I said to him, when I saw what had come: Is it other than the Messenger of God that you have come to announce? What I feared from him was confirmed, and he did not care; he was my friend, my support, and my beauty. By God, I will not forget you, Ahmad, as long as camels carry me in a land and I cross a valley. Whenever I descend from the land into a watercourse, I find a trace of him, new and enduring— A generous man from whom the horses split apart, as if they saw in him a lion preying upon them. Among lions, he protected the den with awe; the beasts of the earth flee from him in flight. Strong, bold of spirit, broad-chested; death itself was raided against him morning and evening. And ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said ؓ concerning what he did on that day: By my life, I was certain that you would die, but I only display what I have said out of grief. And I said the revelation will be absent from us due to his loss, just as Moses was absent, then he will return as he returned. It was my desire that his life be prolonged, but no living person has hope in weeping for the dead. When we uncovered the cloak from the noble face, behold the matter of terrifying grief had occurred. I had no stratagem at the calamity with which to repel the people of gloating and dispersal, save by God's permission in His Book, and what God permits to servants comes to pass. After the speech, I said a saying that was bitter in the throats of those who gloated over him: Lo, the Prophet Muhammad was only for a term which death reached and cut short. We profess his religion despite the faults among us, and we give what he gave and withhold what he withheld. I turned away sorrowful, with a weeping eye, checking my tears while the heart was cleft. I said to my eye: every tear you have stored up, let it flow; for the sorrowful one is impelled to it.
