Chapter mentioning the offspring of Abraham (peace and blessings be upon him)

Translation

✧ Jacob had twelve male children, and we named them, and to them are attributed all the tribes of the Children of Israel. The noblest, most exalted, and greatest of them was Joseph ﷺ. A group of scholars held that there was no prophet among them besides him, and that his remaining brothers did not receive revelation. The apparent account of their actions and statements in this story supports this view. Whoever argues for their prophethood based on His saying: "Say: We believe in God and what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes" [al-Baqarah: 136], and claims that these are the tribes, his argument is not strong, because what is meant by the tribes are the peoples of the Children of Israel and the prophets among them upon whom revelation descended from heaven. And God knows best. Among what supports that Joseph ﷺ was singled out from among his brothers for messengership and prophethood is that the text specifies his prophethood and the revelation to him in more than one verse of His mighty Book, while it does not specify any one of his brothers besides him. This proves what we have mentioned. This is supported by what Imam Ahmad narrated with his chain from Ibn ʿUmar that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "The noble, son of the noble, son of the noble, son of the noble: Joseph son of Jacob son of Isaac son of Abraham." Al-Bukhārī alone narrated it.
