Translation
✧ Then Jacob and his sons and his family entered Egypt. When they arrived, Joseph went out to meet him with many thousands. Jacob looked at the horses and said to his son Judah, while leaning on him: "Is this Pharaoh [of Egypt]?" He said: "No, this is your son Joseph." When they met, Jacob said: "Peace be upon you, O remover of sorrows," because sorrow and weeping had not left him during the period of Joseph's absence from him. He said: When they entered Egypt, he raised his parents, meaning his mother and his father—and it was said: it was his maternal aunt; his mother had died—and Jacob and his mother and his brothers fell down before him prostrating. Prostration was the people's greeting to kings. By prostration he did not mean placing the forehead on the ground, for that is not permissible except to God Almighty; rather, he meant submissiveness, humility, and bowing at the greeting, as is done nowadays to kings. Al-ʿarsh means the throne. And he said: "O my father, this is the interpretation of my dream of old; my Lord has made it true." Between Joseph's dream and Jacob's coming there were forty years—and it was said: eighty years. For he was cast into the well when he was seventeen years old, he met him when he was ninety-seven, and he lived after his reunion twenty-three years; he died at one hundred and twenty years and entrusted his brother Judah. It was said that Joseph's absence from Jacob was eighteen years. It was said that Joseph entered Egypt at seventeen, and Pharaoh appointed him as minister thirteen years after his arrival in Egypt; the duration of his absence from Jacob was twenty-two years; Jacob's stay in Egypt with his family was seventeen years—and other than that was said, and God knows best. The death of Jacob ﷺ. When Jacob died, he entrusted Joseph to bury him with his father Isaac. Joseph did so, traveling with him to Syria and burying him with his father. Then he returned to Egypt. Joseph enjoined that he be carried from Egypt and buried with his forefathers, and Moses carried him when he departed with the Children of Israel. Joseph begot Ephraim and Manasseh. To Ephraim was born Nun, and to Nun Joshua, the attendant of Moses. To Manasseh was born Moses, before Moses son of ʿImrān. The people of the Torah claimed that he is Moses al-Khiḍr. To him was born Raḥmah, the wife of Job, according to one saying. They mentioned that when Jacob died, the people of Egypt wept over him for seventy days. Joseph commanded the physicians, and they embalmed him with spices; he remained in it for forty days. Then Joseph asked the king of Egypt for permission to go out with his father to bury him with his family. He permitted him, and the nobles and elders of Egypt went out with him. When they reached Hebron, they buried him in the cave that Abraham the Friend had purchased from Ephron son of Ṣakhr the Hittite, and they made mourning for him for seven days. They said: Then they returned to their lands. Joseph's brothers consoled Joseph for their father and showed tenderness to him, so he honored them and made their return good. They remained in the land of Egypt. Then death came to Joseph ﷺ, and he enjoined that he be carried with them when they departed from Egypt to be buried with his forefathers. They embalmed him and placed him in a coffin, and he remained in Egypt until Moses ﷺ brought him out with him and buried him with his forefathers, as will come later. They said: He died at one hundred and ten years. This is their text as I have seen it, and as Ibn Jarīr also reported. Mubārak b. Faḍālah said, from al-Ḥasan: Joseph was cast into the well at seventeen, he was absent from his father for eighty years, he lived after that twenty-three years, and he died at one hundred and twenty years. Someone other than him said: He entrusted his brother Judah. May God's blessings and ﷺ and upon all the prophets.
