Translation
✧ The story of Joseph son of Rachel God Almighty sent down concerning his affair, and what happened to him, a surah of the great Quran, so that the wisdom, admonitions, manners, and wise command in it may be pondered. I seek refuge with God from the accursed Satan. In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful: Alif Lām Rāʾ. Those are the signs of the clear Book. We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran, so that you may understand. We relate to you the best of stories by what We have revealed to you of this Quran, though before it you were among the heedless. [Yūsuf: 1–3]. When Joseph said to his father, “O my father, I saw eleven stars, and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me.” He said, “O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers, lest they devise a plot against you. Surely Satan is to man a clear enemy. Thus your Lord will choose you and teach you the interpretation of events, and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your forefathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Surely your Lord is Knowing, Wise.” [Yūsuf: 4–6]. Indeed in Joseph and his brothers there are signs for those who ask. When they said, “Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than we, though we are a band. Surely our father is in clear error. Kill Joseph or cast him to some land, so that your father’s face may be free for you, and after that you may become a righteous people.” One of them said, “Do not kill Joseph, but cast him into the bottom of the well; some caravan will pick him up, if you are going to act.” [Yūsuf: 7–10]. They said, “O our father, why do you not trust us with Joseph, though we are his sincere well-wishers? Send him with us tomorrow to graze and play, and we will surely guard him.” He said, “It surely grieves me that you should take him away, and I fear that the wolf may eat him while you are heedless of him.” They said, “If the wolf eats him while we are a band, then we are surely losers.” [Yūsuf: 11–14]. When they went away with him and agreed to put him in the bottom of the well, We revealed to him, “You will surely inform them of this affair of theirs while they do not perceive.” They came to their father at nightfall weeping. They said, “O our father, we went racing with one another and left Joseph by our belongings, and the wolf ate him. But you will not believe us, even if we are truthful.” They brought his shirt with false blood on it. He said, “Rather your souls have made a matter seem fair to you. So patience is beautiful, and God is the one sought for help against what you describe.” [Yūsuf: 15–18]. A caravan came, and they sent their water-drawer, and he let down his bucket. He said, “What good news! Here is a boy.” And they concealed him as merchandise, but God knows what they do. They sold him for a paltry price, a few counted dirhams, and they were among those who held him in little esteem. The one from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, “Make his stay honorable. Perhaps he may benefit us, or we may take him as a son.” Thus We established Joseph in the land, and so We might teach him the interpretation of events. God prevails over His affair, but most people do not know. When he reached his full strength, We gave him judgment and knowledge. Thus We reward the doers of good. [Yūsuf: 19–22]. And the woman in whose house he was sought to seduce him from himself. She closed the doors and said, “Come, you.” He said, “God forbid! Surely my lord has made my stay honorable. Surely the wrongdoers do not succeed.” She desired him, and he would have desired her had he not seen the proof of his Lord. Thus it was that We might turn away from him evil and indecency. Surely he was one of Our devoted servants. They raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from behind, and they found her master at the door. She said, “What is the recompense of one who intended evil to your household except that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment?” He said, “She sought to seduce me from myself.” And a witness from her household bore witness: “If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth and he is among the liars. But if his shirt is torn from behind, then she has lied and he is among the truthful.” When he saw his shirt torn from behind, he said, “Surely it is of your women’s plotting. Surely your plotting is great. Joseph, turn away from this. And ask forgiveness for your sin. Surely you are among the sinful.” [Yūsuf: 23–29]. And women in the city said, “The wife of the ʿAzīz is seeking to seduce her young man from himself. He has infatuated her with love. Surely we see her in clear error.” When she heard of their malicious talk, she sent for them and prepared for them a reclining place, and gave each one of them a knife, and said, “Come out before them.” When they saw him, they admired him greatly and cut their hands, and said, “God forbid! This is not a human. This is but a noble angel.” She said, “That is the one about whom you blamed me. I sought to seduce him from himself, but he held back. If he does not do what I command him, he will surely be imprisoned and will surely be among the humiliated.” He said, “My Lord, prison is dearer to me than what they invite me to. Unless You turn away their plotting from me, I will incline to them and be among the ignorant.” So his Lord answered him and turned away their plotting from him. Surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing. [Yūsuf: 30–34]. My Lord, prison is dearer to me than what they invite me to. Unless You turn away their plotting from me, I will incline to them and be among the ignorant. It means: if You entrust me to myself, I have nothing but incapacity and weakness, and I possess no benefit or harm for myself except what God wills. I am weak unless You strengthen me, protect me, guard me, and surround me with Your might and power. Therefore God Almighty said: So his Lord answered him and turned away their plotting from him. Surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing. Then it occurred to them, after they had seen the signs, to imprison him for a while. And two young men entered prison with him. One of them said, “I saw myself pressing wine.” The other said, “I saw myself carrying bread on my head, from which birds were eating. Tell us its interpretation. We see you among the doers of good.” He said, “No food will come to you as provision except that I will tell you its interpretation before it comes to you. That is part of what my Lord has taught me. I have forsaken the religion of a people who do not believe in God, and they are disbelievers in the Hereafter. I follow the religion of my fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is not for us to associate anything with God. That is part of God’s favor upon us and upon people, but most people do not give thanks. O my two companions in prison, are many different lords better, or God, the One, the Subduer? You worship besides Him nothing but names you have named, you and your fathers, for which God has sent down no authority. Judgment belongs only to God. He has commanded that you worship none but Him. That is the upright religion, but most people do not know. O my two companions in prison, as for one of you, he will serve wine to his lord. As for the other, he will be crucified, and birds will eat from his head. The matter about which you ask is decided.” [Yūsuf: 35–41]. And the king said, “I see seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green ears and others dry. O assembly, give me a ruling about my vision, if you can interpret visions.” They said, “Confused dreams, and we are not knowledgeable in the interpretation of dreams.” The one of the two who was saved said, after he remembered after a time, “I will tell you its interpretation, so send me.” “Joseph, O truthful one, give us a ruling about seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green ears and others dry, so that I may return to the people, so that they may know.” He said, “You will sow for seven years as usual. What you harvest, leave it in its ear, except a little of what you eat. Then after that will come seven hard years that will consume what you have stored up for them, except a little of what you keep. Then after that will come a year in which people will be given rain, and in which they will press.” [Yūsuf: 43–49]. And the king said, “Bring him to me.” When the messenger came to him, he said, “Return to your lord and ask him what was the case of the women who cut their hands. Surely my Lord is knowing of their plotting.” He said, “What was your affair when you sought to seduce Joseph from himself?” They said, “God forbid! We know no evil against him.” The wife of the ʿAzīz said, “Now the truth has come to light. I sought to seduce him from himself, and he is surely among the truthful. That is so he may know that I did not betray him in secret, and that God does not guide the plotting of the treacherous. I do not absolve myself. Surely the soul commands evil, except what my Lord has mercy upon. Surely my Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.” [Yūsuf: 50–53]. And the king said, “Bring him to me; I will take him for myself.” When he spoke with him, he said, “You are today with us established and trusted.” He said, “Put me over the treasures of the land. I am a knowing guardian.” Thus We established Joseph in the land, to settle in it wherever he wished. We reach with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not waste the reward of the doers of good. And the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believe and are God-fearing. [Yūsuf: 54–57]. And Joseph’s brothers came and entered upon him, and he recognized them, while they did not recognize him. When he had equipped them with their provisions, he said, “Bring me a brother of yours from your father. Do you not see that I give full measure and am the best of hosts? If you do not bring him to me, then there will be no measure for you with me, and do not come near me.” They said, “We will seek to persuade his father about him, and we will surely do it.” He said to his servants, “Put their merchandise in their saddlebags, so that they may recognize it when they return to their people, so that they may come back.” [Yūsuf: 58–62]. When they returned to their father, they said, “O our father, the measure has been withheld from us, so send our brother with us, that we may obtain measure, and we will surely guard him.” He said, “Should I trust you with him except as I trusted you with his brother before? God is the best guardian, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.” When they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, “O our father, what more could we seek? This is our merchandise returned to us. We will provision our family, guard our brother, and obtain an extra camel-load. That is an easy measure.” He said, “I will not send him with you until you give me a solemn pledge by God that you will surely bring him back to me, unless you are surrounded.” When they gave him their pledge, he said, “God is witness over what we say.” And he said, “O my sons, do not enter by one gate, but enter by different gates. I cannot avail you anything against God. Judgment belongs only to God. Upon Him I rely, and upon Him let the reliant rely.” When they entered as their father commanded them, it did not avail them anything against God, except a need in Jacob’s soul that he fulfilled. Surely he had knowledge because We taught him, but most people do not know. [Yūsuf: 63–68]. When they entered upon Joseph, he took his brother to himself and said, “I am your brother, so do not grieve over what they used to do.” When he had equipped them with their provisions, he put the drinking cup in his brother’s saddlebag. Then a herald proclaimed, “O caravan, you are surely thieves.” They said, turning to them, “What are you missing?” They said, “We are missing the king’s goblet, and whoever brings it will have a camel-load, and I am responsible for it.” They said, “By God, you know we did not come to do mischief in the land, and we are not thieves.” They said, “What is its punishment if you are liars?” They said, “Its punishment is that the one in whose saddlebag it is found, he himself is its punishment. Thus we punish the wrongdoers.” He began with their vessels before his brother’s vessel, then brought it out of his brother’s vessel. Thus We devised for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother by the king’s law, unless God willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, and above every possessor of knowledge is one more knowing. They said, “If he steals, a brother of his stole before.” Joseph concealed it in himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, “You are worse in position, and God knows best what you describe.” They said, “O ʿAzīz, he has an aged, elderly father, so take one of us in his place. We see you among the doers of good.” He said, “God forbid that we should take anyone except the one with whom we found our property. Then we would surely be wrongdoers.” [Yūsuf: 69–79]. When they despaired of him, they withdrew privately. The eldest of them said, “Do you not know that your father has taken a solemn pledge from you by God, and before that you failed concerning Joseph? I will not leave the land until my father permits me, or God decides for me, and He is the Best of judges. Return to your father and say, ‘O our father, your son has stolen. We bear witness only to what we know, and we were not guardians of the unseen. Ask the town where we were, and the caravan with which we came, and we are surely truthful.’” He said, “Rather your souls have made a matter seem fair to you. So patience is beautiful. Perhaps God will bring them all to me. Surely He is the Knowing, the Wise.” He turned away from them and said, “Alas, my grief for Joseph!” And his eyes turned white from grief, and he was full of suppressed sorrow. They said, “By God, you will keep remembering Joseph until you are ruined or among the perished.” He said, “I complain of my anguish and grief only to God, and I know from God what you do not know. O my sons, go and search for Joseph and his brother, and do not despair of God’s relief. Surely none despair of God’s relief except the disbelieving people.” [Yūsuf: 80–87]. When they entered upon him, they said, “O ʿAzīz, hardship has touched us and our family, and we have brought poor merchandise. So give us full measure and be charitable to us. Surely God rewards the charitable.” He said, “Do you know what you did to Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?” They said, “Are you indeed Joseph?” He said, “I am Joseph, and this is my brother. God has been gracious to us. Surely whoever fears God and is patient, God does not waste the reward of the doers of good.” They said, “By God, God has preferred you over us, and we were surely sinful.” He said, “No blame upon you today. God forgives you, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful. Take this shirt of mine and cast it on my father’s face; he will become seeing. And bring me all your family.” [Yūsuf: 88–93]. When the caravan set out, their father said, “I surely perceive the scent of Joseph, if you do not think me senile.” They said, “By God, you are surely in your old error.” When the bearer of good news came, he cast it on his face, and he became seeing. He said, “Did I not tell you that I know from God what you do not know?” They said, “O our father, ask forgiveness for our sins. We were surely sinful.” He said, “I will ask my Lord to forgive you. Surely He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” [Yūsuf: 94–98]. When they entered upon Joseph, he took his parents to himself and said, “Enter Egypt, if God wills, in safety.” He raised his parents on the throne, and they fell down prostrating to him. He said, “O my father, this is the interpretation of my vision from before. My Lord has made it true. He was good to me when He brought me out of prison and brought you from the desert, after Satan had stirred up discord between me and my brothers. Surely my Lord is subtle in what He wills. Surely He is the Knowing, the Wise. My Lord, You have given me of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of events. Creator of the heavens and the earth, You are my guardian in this world and the Hereafter. Take me as a Muslim and join me with the righteous.” [Yūsuf: 99–101]
