The illness of the Prophet ﷺ and his death

Translation
✧ Concerning what is related that he ﷺ asked his companions for retaliation from himself Ibn Saʿd, Abū Yaʿlā, al-Ṭabarānī, Ibn Jarīr, al-Bayhaqī, Abū Nuʿaym, and Ibn al-Jawzī narrated from al-Faḍl b. ʿAbbās ؓ who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: «Bind my head, perhaps I may go out to the mosque.» So I bound his head with a bandage, then he went out to the mosque, supported between two men, until he came to the pulpit. Then he said: Call out among the people. So I called out among the people, and they gathered to him. He said: To proceed, O people, I praise to you Allah, besides whom there is no god but He. Verily, a departure from among you has drawn near to me. I am only the father of a mortal being (abā bishr). Whoever I have struck his back, this is my back, so let him take retaliation from it. Whoever I have taken wealth from, this is my wealth, so let him take from it. Whoever I have insulted his honor, this is my honor, so let him take retaliation from it. Let no one say: I fear ill will from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Lo, ill will is not of my nature nor of my concern. Lo, the best of you to me is the one who takes from me something that was his due, or absolves me, so that I meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, with a clear conscience. I see that this will not suffice until I stand among you repeatedly. Then he descended and prayed the noon prayer, then sat on the pulpit and returned to his first statement about ill will and other matters. A man stood and said: Then by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I have three dirhams owed by you. He said: As for me, I do not call a speaker a liar, nor do I make him swear an oath. For what were they owed by me? He said: O Messenger of Allah, do you remember the day the poor man passed by you, and you commanded me, and I gave him three dirhams? He said: O Faḍl, give it to him. Then he said: O people, whoever owes anything, let him pay it. Let no man say: The disgrace of this world. Lo, the disgrace of this world is lighter than the disgrace of the hereafter. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated his first statement, then said: «O people, whoever has any embezzled property, let him return it.» A man stood to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have three dirhams that I embezzled in the way of Allah. He said: «Why did you embezzle them?» He said: I was in need of them. He said: «Take them from him, O Faḍl.» Then he said: Lo, whoever feels—and in another wording—fears in himself anything, let him come. Supplicate Allah for him. A man stood and said: O Messenger of Allah, I am indeed a liar and I am indeed obscene. He said: «O Allah, grant him truthfulness and remove from him lying when he intends it.» Then a man stood and said: O Messenger of Allah, I am a hypocrite, and I am indeed stingy, and I am indeed cowardly, [and I am indeed drowsy, and I am indeed a liar. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb stood and said: You have disgraced yourself, O man.] The Prophet ﷺ said: O Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, the disgrace of this world is lighter than the disgrace of the hereafter. He said: O Allah, grant him faith and truthfulness, remove from him sleep and the avarice of his soul, and embolden his cowardice. Al-Faḍl said: I saw him in battle, and with us there was no man [more generous] in spirit than him, nor stronger in courage, nor less in sleep. ʿUmar said a word, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed, then said: ʿUmar is with me and I am with ʿUmar, and the truth is with ʿUmar wherever he is. A woman stood and gestured with her finger toward her women. He said: Go to the house of ʿĀʾishah until I come to you. Then he went to her and placed a stick on her head, then supplicated for her. ʿĀʾishah ؓ said: I did not recognize the supplication of the Prophet ﷺ for her, since she used to say: O ʿĀʾishah, improve your prayer.
