The illness of the Prophet ﷺ and his death

Translation

✧ [ The severity of the illness and pouring water over him ] Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was overwhelmed, and his pain intensified, so he said: "Pour over me seven waterskins from different wells, so that I may go out to the people and make a covenant to them." She said: So we seated him in a washtub belonging to Ḥafṣah bt. ʿUmar, then we poured water over him until he began to say: "Enough for you, enough for you." Al-Bukhārī and Muslim, Ibn Saʿd, and al-Ḥākim narrated from ʿĀʾishah ؓ that she said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became heavy and his pain intensified, he said: "Pour over me from seven waterskins whose ties have not been untied, perhaps I may make a covenant to the people." She said: So we seated him in a washtub belonging to Ḥafṣah, then we began to pour over him from those waterskins until he began to gesture to us that you had done it, then he went out to the people and prayed with them and delivered a sermon to them. Ibn Isḥāq narrated from her that she said: The Prophet ﷺ said during his illness: "Pour over me from seven waterskins from different wells so that I may go out to the people and make a covenant to them." She said: So we seated him in a washtub belonging to Ḥafṣah, and we poured water over him as a pouring, or we sprinkled water over him as a sprinkling, and he found relief, so he went out with his head bandaged, ascended the pulpit, praised Allah and extolled Him, sought forgiveness for the martyrs from the companions of Uḥud, and supplicated for them. Then he said: "Now then, the Anṣār are my trusty companions to whom I resorted, so honor their good ones and overlook their wrongdoers, except in a prescribed punishment. Verily, a servant from among the servants of Allah has been given the choice by Allah between this world and what is with Allah, and he has chosen what is with Allah." Abū Bakr understood it and realized that he meant his own self, so he wept and said: "Rather, may we ransom you with ourselves and our sons." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Gently, O Abū Bakr. Close these doors that open into the mosque except the door of Abū Bakr, for I do not know any man more excellent in my sight in companionship than Abū Bakr." This is from the chapter of seeking cure by the seven, as the ḥadīths have stated. The point is that he, peace and blessings be upon him, performed a ghusl, then went out and prayed with the people, then delivered a sermon to them.
