Chapter mentioning the offspring of Abraham (peace and blessings be upon him)

Translation

✧ They returned to Egypt and entered upon Joseph and said: “Adversity has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods of scant worth” [12:88]—that was clarified butter and wool—and they asked for leniency toward them, and said to him: “And give charity to us” [12:88], meaning from the excess between the inferior and the superior; it is also said: return our brother to us. When he heard their words, his soul overpowered him and his tears flowed weeping, then he disclosed to them what he had been concealing. It is said that he revealed this to them only because his father had written to him, when he was told that he had taken his son because he stole—a letter: From Jacob, Israel of God, son of Isaac, sacrifice of God, son of Abraham, friend of God, to the mighty one of Egypt, the manifester of justice. To proceed: we are a household upon whom trial is appointed. As for my grandfather, his hands and feet were bound, and he was cast into the fire, but God made it coolness and peace. As for my father, his hands and feet were bound, and the knife was placed on his throat to slaughter him, but God ransomed him. As for me, I had a son who was the dearest of my children to me, and his brothers took him to the wilderness, then they returned with his shirt smeared with blood and said: the wolf ate him. I had another son, his brother from his mother, with whom I consoled myself, but they took him, then they returned and said: he stole, and you imprisoned him. We are a household that does not steal, and we do not beget a thief. So if you return him to me, otherwise I will call upon you a supplication that reaches the seventh of your offspring. When he read the letter, he could not restrain himself from weeping, and he revealed himself to them, saying: “Do you know what you did to Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?” They said: “Are you indeed Joseph?” He said: “I am Joseph and this is my brother. God has been gracious to us” by bringing us together. They apologized and said: “By God, God has preferred you over us, and we were indeed sinners.” He said: “No reproach upon you this day” [12:92], meaning I will not mention your sin to you; “may God forgive you” [12:92]. Then he asked them about their father, and they said: When Benjamin was lost to him, he became blind from grief. He said: “Go with this shirt of mine and cast it over my father's face; he will come seeing, and bring me all your family” [12:93]. Judah said: I will go with it, for I went to him with the shirt smeared with blood and told him that Joseph had been eaten by the wolf; so I will tell him that he is alive, and I will gladden him as I saddened him. He was the bearer of good tidings. When the caravan departed from Egypt, the wind carried to Jacob the scent of Joseph, while between them were eighty parasangs, Joseph in Egypt and Jacob in the land of Canaan. Jacob said: “Indeed I find the scent of Joseph, if you do not think me senile” [12:94]? Those of his sons present with him said: “By God, you are indeed in your old error” [12:95] concerning the mention of Joseph. When the bearer of good tidings came with Joseph's shirt, he cast it over Jacob's face, and he became seeing again, and he said: “Did I not tell you that I know from God what you do not know” [12:96], meaning the truthfulness of God's interpretation of Joseph's vision. When the bearer of good tidings came, Jacob said to him: How did you leave Joseph? He said: He is king of Egypt. He said: What do I care for kingship? Upon what religion did you leave him? He said: Upon Islam. He said: Now the blessing is complete. When those of his sons with him saw Joseph's shirt and his news, they said to him: “Our father, ask forgiveness for our sins” [12:97]. He said: “I will ask forgiveness for you” [12:98], and he delayed the supplication until the pre-dawn of Friday night.
