Translation
✧ The expedition of Ibn Abī Ḥadrad to kill Rifāʿah b. Qays al-Jushamī [Its cause] Ibn Isḥāq said: And the expedition of Ibn Abī Ḥadrad al-Aslamī to al-Ghābah. And the account of it, as it reached me, from one I do not suspect, from Ibn Abī Ḥadrad, who said: I married a woman of my people and gave her a dowry of two hundred dirhams. He said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his help with my marriage; he said: “How much did you give as dowry?” I said: “Two hundred dirhams, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Glory be to Allah! If you were to take dirhams from a valley’s bed, you would not increase. By Allah, I have nothing with which to help you.” He said: I remained for some days. Then a man of Banū Jusham b. Muʿāwiyah, called Rifāʿah b. Qays, or Qays b. Rifāʿah, came with a great host of Banū Jusham until he camped with his people and those with him at al-Ghābah, intending to gather Qays against the war with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He was a man of name and honor among Jusham. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned me and two other Muslims with me and said: “Go out to this man until you bring back news and knowledge of him.” He said: He provided us with a lean old camel, and one of us was mounted on it. By Allah, it could not carry him because of its weakness, until the men propped it from behind with their hands until it stood up, and even then it could hardly stand. Then he said: “Take turns riding it.” [The Muslims’ victory and Ibn Abī Ḥadrad’s share of the spoils with which he helped himself to marry] He said: We went out with our weapons of arrows and swords, until when we came near the encampment in the evening with the setting of the sun. He said: I lay in ambush in one direction, and I ordered my two companions to lie in ambush in another direction of the people’s encampment. I said to them: “When you hear me proclaim the takbīr and charge against one side of the camp, then proclaim the takbīr and charge with me.” He said: By Allah, we were thus waiting for the people’s negligence, or to seize something from them. He said: Night fell upon us until the darkness of the evening had passed. They had a shepherd who had gone out to pasture in that land, and he was late in returning to them, so they feared for him. He said: Their companion, that Rifāʿah b. Qays, stood up, took his sword, and put it around his neck. Then he said: “By Allah, I will follow the tracks of this shepherd of ours; some evil has befallen him.” A group of those with him said: “By Allah, do not go; we will suffice you.” He said: “By Allah, no one but I will go.” They said: “Then we will go with you.” He said: “By Allah, none of you shall follow me.” He said: He went out until he passed by me. He said: When he came within my reach, I shot him with my arrow and placed it in his heart. He said: By Allah, he did not speak. I leaped upon him and cut off his head. He said: Then I charged against one side of the camp and proclaimed the takbīr, and my two companions charged and proclaimed the takbīr. He said: By Allah, there was nothing but flight for those in it— “To you! To you!”—with all they could carry of their women and children and whatever light possessions they had with them. He said: We drove off a great number of camels and many sheep, and brought them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: I brought his head carrying it with me. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ helped me from those camels with thirteen camels for my dowry, and I brought my family together.
