! ✧ The expedition of Abū Qatādah ؓ again to Baṭn Iḍam in the beginning of the month of Ramaḍān before the conquest of Makkah. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to head to Makkah, he sent Abū Qatādah al-Ḥārith b. Ribʿī ؓ with eight men to Baṭn Iḍam so that anyone might think that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had headed to that direction, and so that the news would spread accordingly. Ibn Isḥāq said: Yazīd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qusayṭ narrated to me, from Ibn ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ḥadrad, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us to Iḍam among a group of Muslims, including Abū Qatādah al-Ḥārith b. Ribʿī and Muḥallim b. Jaththāmah b. Qays. We set out until when we were at Baṭn Iḍam, ʿĀmir b. al-Aḍbaṭ al-Ashjaʿī passed by us on a young camel of his, with him a small skin of his and a leather milk container. He greeted us with the greeting of Islam, but we held back from him, and Muḥallim b. Jaththāmah attacked him and killed him because of something that had been between them, and took his camel and his small skin. When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him the news, the Qurʾān was revealed concerning us: 'O you who have believed, when you go forth in the cause of Allah, investigate; and do not say to one who gives you [a greeting of] peace, "You are not a believer," aspiring for the goods of worldly life, for with Allah are many acquisitions. You [yourselves] were like that before; then Allah conferred His favor upon you, so investigate. Indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted' (al-Nisāʾ: 94). Thus Imam Aḥmad narrated it, from Yaʿqūb, from his father, from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, from Yazīd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qusayṭ, from al-Qaʿqāʿ b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ḥadrad, from his father, and he mentioned it. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar narrated to me, saying: I heard Ziyād b. Ḍumayrah b. Saʿd al-Ḍamrī relating to ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, from his father and his grandfather, who said—and both had witnessed Ḥunayn—he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the noon prayer, then went to the shade of a tree and sat there. ʿUyaynah b. Badr came to him demanding the blood of ʿĀmir b. al-Aḍbaṭ al-Ashjaʿī, who was the chief of Qays, and al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis came defending Muḥallim b. Jaththāmah, who was the chief of Khindif. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the people of ʿĀmir: "Would you accept from us now fifty camels and fifty when we return to al-Madīnah?" ʿUyaynah b. Badr said: By Allah, I will not leave him until I make his women taste of grief the like of what he made my women taste. A man from Banū Layth called Ibn Mukaytil—and he was of medium stature among men—stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, for this slain man I find no likeness in the beginning of Islam except like a flock of sheep that came to water and the first of them was shot, so the rest bolted. Set a precedent today and change it tomorrow. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Would you accept fifty camels now and fifty when we return to al-Madīnah?" He kept at them until they accepted the blood money. Then the people of Muḥallim b. Jaththāmah said: Bring him so that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ may seek forgiveness for him. He said: A tall man, muscular, came in a garment in which he had prepared himself for execution, and stood before the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said: "O Allah, do not forgive Muḥallim." He said it three times. He stood up wiping his tears with the edge of his garment. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq said: His people claimed that he sought forgiveness for him after that. Thus Abū Dāwūd narrated it through the path of Ḥammād b. Salamah, from Ibn Isḥāq, and Ibn Mājah narrated it from Abū Bakr b. Abī Shaybah, from Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar, from Ibn Isḥāq, from Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar, from Zayd b. Ḍumayrah, from his father and his paternal uncle, and he mentioned part of it. The correct version is as Ibn Isḥāq narrated it, from Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar, from Ziyād b. Saʿd b. Ḍumayrah, from his father and his grandfather. Thus Abū Dāwūd narrated it through the path of Ibn Wahb, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Zinād, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥārith, from Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar, from Ziyād b. Saʿd b. Ḍumayrah, from his father and his grandfather, in similar form as preceded. Ibn Isḥāq said: Sālim Abū al-Naḍr narrated to me that he said: They did not accept the blood money until al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis stood up, went aside with them, and said: O assembly of Qays, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked you for a slain man whom you would relinquish so that he might reconcile people through him, and you refused him. Are you secure that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will become angry with you, and Allah will become angry because of his anger, or that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will curse you, and Allah will curse you by his curse upon you? By Allah, you will surrender him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or I will bring fifty men from Banū Tamīm, all of whom will testify that the slain man was an unbeliever who never prayed, and I will nullify his blood. When he said that to them, they took the blood money. This is a disconnected, problematic chain. Ibn Isḥāq narrated, from someone he did not suspect, from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, that when Muḥallim sat before him, upon him be peace and blessing, he said to him: "You granted him security by Allah, then you killed him?!" Then he supplicated against him. Al-Ḥasan said: By Allah, Muḥallim remained only seven [days] until he died, and the earth cast him out. Then they buried him, and the earth cast him out. Then they buried him, and the earth cast him out. So they heaped stones upon him until they concealed him. That reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "Indeed the earth would close over one who is worse than him, but Allah wanted to admonish you concerning the sanctity of what is between you by what He showed you of him." Ibn Jarīr said: Wakīʿ narrated to us; Jarīr narrated to us, from Ibn Isḥāq, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Muḥallim b. Jaththāmah on an expedition. ʿĀmir b. al-Aḍbaṭ met them and greeted them with the greeting of Islam—and there had been enmity between them in the Jāhiliyyah—so Muḥallim shot him with an arrow and killed him. The news came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and ʿUyaynah and al-Aqraʿ spoke about it. Al-Aqraʿ said: O Messenger of Allah, set a precedent today and change it tomorrow. ʿUyaynah said: No, by Allah, not until his women taste of bereavement what my women tasted. Muḥallim came in two cloaks and sat before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that he might seek forgiveness for him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "May Allah not forgive you." He stood up wiping his tears with his two cloaks. Before his seventh [day] had passed, he died. They buried him, and the earth cast him out. They came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: "The earth accepts one who is worse than your companion, but Allah wanted to admonish you concerning your sanctity." Then they threw him between two sloping sides of a mountain and cast stones upon him, and it was revealed: 'O you who have believed, when you go forth in the cause of Allah, investigate'—the verse. Mūsā b. ʿUqbah mentioned it from al-Zuhrī, and Shuʿayb narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Mawhab, from Qabīṣah b. Dhuʾayb, in a similar version of this story, except that he did not name Muḥallim b. Jaththāmah or ʿĀmir b. al-Aḍbaṭ. Likewise al-Bayhaqī narrated it from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī in a similar version of this story, and he said: Concerning him was revealed the saying of the Exalted: 'O you who have believed, when you go forth in the cause of Allah, investigate'—the verse. .
