Translation

✧ The expedition of Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh to the land of Banū Murrah [The killing of Mirdās] Ibn Isḥāq said: And the expedition of Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kalbī — Kalb of Layth — to the land of Banū Murrah, in which he struck Mirdās b. Nahīk, an ally of theirs from al-Ḥuraqah, of Juhaynah. He was killed by Usāmah b. Zayd and a man from the Anṣār. Ibn Hishām said: Al-Ḥuraqah, according to what Abū ʿUbaydah narrated to me. Ibn Isḥāq said: And part of his account on the authority of Usāmah b. Zayd, who said: I and a man from the Anṣār overtook him, and when we brandished weapons at him, he said, “I bear witness that there is no god but God.” He said: But we did not desist from him until we killed him. Then when we came to the Messenger of God ﷺ we told him his news, and he said, “O Usāmah, who will answer for you against ‘there is no god but God’?” He said: I said, “O Messenger of God, he only said it seeking protection from being killed.” He said, “Then who will answer for you against it, O Usāmah?” He said: By the One who sent him with the truth, he kept repeating it to me until I wished that what had passed of my Islam had not been, and that I had only become Muslim that day, and that I had not killed him. He said: I said, “Grant me respite, O Messenger of God; I make a covenant with God that I will never kill a man who says ‘there is no god but God’ ever.” He said, “You say that after me, O Usāmah?” He said: I said, “After you.” Ibn Saʿd narrated from Ibrāhīm b. Ḥuwayyiṣah b. Masʿūd from his father, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent me in a raiding party with Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh against Banū Murrah, and we raided them at dawn, and our commander had enjoined us not to separate and paired us together. He said, “Do not disobey me, for I am the Messenger of God’s ﷺ. He said: ‘Whoever obeys my commander has obeyed me, and whoever disobeys my commander has disobeyed me,’ and whenever you disobey me, you only disobey your Prophet.” He said: So he paired me with Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī. He said: Then we struck the people, and their watchword was “Amit, amit.” Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: In this raiding party Usāmah b. Zayd went out in pursuit of a man of theirs called Nahīk b. Mirdās or Mirdās b. Nahīk, and the latter is correct. He went far, and the Muslims prevailed over those present, killed whom they killed, and drove off camels and sheep. Ibn Saʿd mentioned that in the raiding party of Ghālib to al-Mayfaʿah. Ghālib missed Usāmah b. Zayd, and Usāmah came after an hour of the night, so the commander rebuked him severely and said, “Did you not see what I enjoined upon you?” He said, “I went out in pursuit of a man of theirs called Nahīk; he kept mocking me until, when I drew near him, he said, ‘There is no god but God.’” The commander said, “Did you sheathe your sword?” He said, “No, by God, I did not do so until I brought him to Shuʿūb.” He said, “Evil is what you have done and what you have brought! You kill a man who says ‘there is no god but God’?” So Usāmah regretted it and was left at a loss. The Muslims drove off the camels, sheep, and offspring, and their shares were ten camels for each man or the equivalent of them in sheep, and they counted a slaughtered camel as ten sheep.
