Translation

✧ ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays set out from al-Madīnah on Monday, five nights having passed in al-Muḥarram, at the head of thirty-five months from the Messenger of Allāh’s ﷺ emigration: the expedition of ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays to kill Khālid b. Sufyān b. Nubayḥ al-Hudhalī. [The Slaying of Ibn Nubayḥ] And the expedition of ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays against Khālid b. Sufyān b. Nubayḥ: the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sent him to him while he was at Nakhlah or at ʿUranah, gathering people against the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ to raid him, so he killed him. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr related to me, saying: ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ summoned me and said: “It has reached me that Ibn Sufyān b. Nubayḥ al-Hudhalī is gathering people against me to raid me, and he is at Nakhlah or at ʿUranah. Go to him and kill him.” I said: “O Messenger of Allāh, describe him to me so that I may recognize him.” He said: “When you see him, he will remind you of Satan, and the sign between you and him is that when you see him you will feel a shuddering.” He said: So I went out with my sword slung over my shoulder, until I reached him while he was among women in howdahs, seeking a stopping place for them, and it was the time of the afternoon prayer. When I saw him, I felt what the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ had told me of the shuddering. I approached him, and I feared that there might be between me and him some engagement that would distract me from the prayer, so I prayed while I was walking toward him, making gestures with my head. When I reached him, he said: “Who is the man?” I said: “A man from the Arabs who has heard of you and of your gathering against this man, so he has come to you for that.” He said: “Yes, I am indeed engaged in that.” He said: So I walked with him for a while, until when I had the opportunity, I attacked him with the sword and killed him. Then I departed, leaving his women bending over him. When I came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and he saw me, he said: “May the face prosper.” I said: “I have killed him, O Messenger of Allāh.” He said: “You have spoken the truth.” [The Messenger’s Gift of a Staff to Ibn Unays] Then he rose with me and brought me into his house and gave me a staff, saying: “Keep this staff with you, O ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays.” He said: So I went out with it among the people, and they said: “What is this staff?” I said: “The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ gave it to me and commanded me to keep it with me.” They said: “Will you not return to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and ask him why that is?” He said: So I returned to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allāh, why did you give me this staff?” He said: “A sign between me and you on the Day of Resurrection. The fewest people that day will be those who carry staffs.” He said: So ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays fastened it to his sword, and it remained with him until he died. Then he ordered that it be placed in his shroud, and they were buried together. [The Poetry of Ibn Unays on His Killing of Ibn Nubayḥ] Ibn Hishām said: And ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays said concerning that: I left Ibn Thawr like a young camel, while around him Wailing women tore every slit collar, I reached him while the howdahs were behind me and behind him With a white blade from the water of iron, Indian-made, A biter of the crowns of the armored, as if it were A meteor of ghaḍā wood from a blazing fire. I say to him while the sword bites his head: I am Ibn Unays, a horseman, not one who sits back, I am the son of one whose pot time has never lowered, Spacious is the courtyard of his house, not narrow. And I said to him: take it from the stroke of a noble one, A ḥanīf upon the religion of the Prophet Muḥammad, And when the Prophet was concerned about an unbeliever, I preceded to him with tongue and with hand. The expedition is complete, and we return to the account of the missions. I—Ibn Kathīr, may God Almighty have mercy on him—say: ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays b. Asʿad b. Ḥarām, Abū Yaḥyā al-Juhanī, was a well-known Companion of great standing. He was among those who attended al-ʿAqabah, and he witnessed Uḥud, the Trench, and what followed. His death was delayed in Syria until the year eighty according to the well-known view, though it is said he died in the year fifty-four; and God knows best. ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī and Khalīfah b. Khayyāṭ distinguished between him and ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays Abū ʿĪsā al-Anṣārī, who narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that on the day of Uḥud he called for a small vessel containing water, then bent its mouth and drank from it, as related by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, through the transmission of ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿUmarī, from ʿĪsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays, from his father. Then al-Tirmidhī said: its chain is not sound.
