The messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his correspondence to the kings and the like
إِرْسَالِهِ ﷺ نُعَيْمَ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ الْأَشْجَعِيَّ ؓ إِلَى ابْنِ ذِي اللِّحْيَةِ [قَالَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ الْبَرِّ: جَدُّهُ عَامِرٌ، هَاجَرَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْخَنْدَقِ، وَهُوَ الَّذِي خَذَلَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَبَنِي قُرَيْظَةَ حَتَّى صَرَفَ اللَّهُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ بَعْدَ أَنْ أَرْسَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا وَجُنُودًا لَمْ يَرَوْهَا، وَخَبَرُهُ فِي تَخْذِيلِ بَنِي قُرَيْظَةَ وَالْمُشْرِكِينَ فِي السِّيَرِ خَبَرٌ عَجِيبٌ، وَنَزَلَتْ فِيهِ: الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ، كُنِّيَ عَنْهُ وَحْدَهُ بِالنَّاسِ. سَكَنَ نُعَيْمٌ الْمَدِينَةَ، وَمَاتَ فِي خِلَافَةِ عُثْمَانَ، وَقِيلَ: قُتِلَ فِي الْجَمَلِ قَبْلَ قُدُومِ عَلِيٍّ - ؓ. وَذَكَرَ سَيْفُ بْنُ عُمَرَ فِي كِتَابِ الرِّدَّةِ: أَنَّهُ كَانَ رَسُولَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى ابْنِ ذِي اللِّحْيَةِ وَابْنِ مُشَيْمِصَةَ الْجُبَيْرِيِّ ].
Translation
✧ His ﷺ sending Nuʿaym b. Masʿūd al-Ashjaʿī ؓ to Ibn Dhī al-Liḥyah [Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said: His grandfather was ʿĀmir. He emigrated to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the Trench, and he is the one who discouraged the polytheists and Banū Qurayẓah until Allah turned away the polytheists after Allah sent upon them a wind and soldiers they did not see. His account of discouraging Banū Qurayẓah and the polytheists in the biographies is a wondrous account, and concerning him it was revealed: "Those to whom the people said" — he alone was referred to by "the people." Nuʿaym settled in Madinah and died during the caliphate of ʿUthmān, and it was said: He was killed at the Camel before the arrival of ʿAlī ؓ. And Sayf b. ʿUmar mentioned in the Book of the Riddah: that he was the messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Ibn Dhī al-Liḥyah and Ibn Mushaymiṣah al-Jubayrī.]
