The messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his correspondence to the kings and the like
إِرْسَالِهِ ﷺ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ إِلَى هَجَرَ مَعَ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ الْبَرِّ: أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ هُوَ عُمَيْرُ بْنُ عَامِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ ذِي الشَّرَى بْنِ طَرِيفِ بْنِ عَتَّابِ بْنِ أَبِي صَعْبِ بْنِ مُنَبِّهِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ سُلَيْمِ بْنِ فَهْمِ بْنِ غَنْمِ بْنِ دَوْسٍ. ذَكَرَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ الْبَرِّ فِي اسْمِهِ وَاسْمِ أَبِيهِ اخْتِلَافًا كَثِيرًا، حَاصِلُهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ اسْمُهُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ: عَبْدَ شَمْسٍ، وَفِي الْإِسْلَامِ: عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَوْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، وَغَلَبَتْ عَلَيْهِ كُنْيَتُهُ فَعُرِفَ بِهَا. رُوِيَ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: كُنْتُ أَحْمِلُ هِرَّةً فِي كُمِّي، فَرَآنِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِي: مَا هَذَا ؟ فَقُلْتُ: هِرَّةٌ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ. أَسْلَمَ ؓ عَامَ خَيْبَرَ وَشَهِدَهَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ- ﷺ، وَكَانَ يَدُورُ مَعَهُ حَيْثُ دَارَ، وَكَانَ مِنْ أَحْفَظِ الصَّحَابَةِ ؓ. وَشَهِدَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ- ﷺ بِأَنَّهُ حَرِيصٌ عَلَى الْعِلْمِ وَالْحَدِيثِ. وَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ مِنْكَ حَدِيثًا كَثِيرًا، وَإِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ أَنْسَى، فَقَالَ: ابْسُطْ رِدَاءَكَ! قَالَ: فَبَسَطْتُهُ فَغَرَفَ بِيَدِهِ فِيهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: ضُمَّهُ! فَمَا نَسِيتُ شَيْئًا بَعْدُ. قَالَ الْبُخَارِيُّ: رَوَى عَنْهُ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ ثَمَانِمِائَةٍ مَا بَيْنَ صَاحِبٍ وَتَابِعٍ. اسْتَعْمَلَهُ عُمَرُ عَلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ ثُمَّ عَزَلَهُ، ثُمَّ أَرَادَهُ عَلَى الْعَمَلِ فَأَبَى، وَلَمْ يَزَلْ بِالْمَدِينَةِ حَتَّى تُوَفِّيَ بِهَا سَنَةَ سَبْعٍ وَخَمْسِينَ، وَهُوَ ابْنُ ثَمَانٍ وَسَبْعِينَ سَنَةً. وَقِيلَ: مَاتَ بِالْعَقِيقِ، وَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، وَكَانَ أَمِيرَ الْمَدِينَةِ، وَمَرْوَانُ مَعْزُولٌ. قَالَ ابْنُ سَعْدٍ: كَتَبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ- ﷺ إِلَى مَجُوسِ هَجَرَ يَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْإِسْلَامَ، فَإِنْ أَبَوْا أُخِذَتْ مِنْهُمُ الْجِزْيَةُ، وَبَعَثَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ مَعَ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ وَأَوْصَاهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا.
Translation
✧ His ﷺ sending Abū Hurayrah ؓ to Hajar with al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said: Abū Hurayrah is ʿUmayr b. ʿĀmir b. ʿAbd Dhī al-Sharā b. Ṭarīf b. ʿAttāb b. Abī Ṣaʿb b. Munabbih b. Saʿd b. Thaʿlabah b. Sulaym b. Fahm b. Ghanm b. Daws. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr mentioned much disagreement concerning his name and his father's name, the summary of which is that his name in the pre-Islamic era was ʿAbd Shams, and in Islam: ʿAbd Allāh or ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and his kunyah prevailed over him so he became known by it. It is related from him that he said: I used to carry a cat in my sleeve, and the Prophet ﷺ saw me and said to me: What is this? I said: A cat. He said: O Abū Hurayrah. He embraced Islam ؓ in the year of Khaybar and witnessed it with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he used to go around with him wherever he went, and he was among the most retentive of the Companions ؓ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ testified that he was eager for knowledge and ḥadīth. He said: O Messenger of Allah! I have heard from you many ḥadīths, and I fear that I may forget. He said: Spread out your cloak! He said: So I spread it out, and he scooped with his hand into it, then said: Gather it to you! And I never forgot anything after that. Al-Bukhārī said: More than eight hundred, between Companions and Successors, narrated from him. ʿUmar appointed him over al-Baḥrayn, then dismissed him, then wanted him for the work but he refused, and he remained in al-Madīnah until he died there in the year fifty-seven, at the age of seventy-eight years. It is said: He died at al-ʿAqīq, and al-Walīd b. ʿUtbah b. Abī Sufyān prayed over him, and he was the governor of al-Madīnah, while Marwān was dismissed. Ibn Saʿd said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to the Magians of Hajar presenting Islam to them, and if they refused, the jizyah would be taken from them, and he sent Abū Hurayrah with al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī and enjoined good treatment of him.
