Translation

✧ His ﷺ sending ʿAmr b. Ḥazm ؓ to Yemen [Muḥammad b. Saʿd said in al-Ṭabaqāt: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote for ʿAmr b. Ḥazm, when he sent him to Yemen, a covenant instructing him in the laws of Islam, its obligations, and its prescribed punishments, and Ubayy wrote it. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said: ʿAmr b. Ḥazm b. Zayd b. Lawdhān al-Khazrajī, of the Banū Mālik b. al-Najjār, and he mentioned disagreement concerning his lineage. He was given the kunyah Abū al-Ḍaḥḥāk. He did not witness Badr, and the first of his expeditions was al-Khandaq. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed him over Najrān, that is, the Balḥārith b. Kaʿb, while he was seventeen years old, to teach them the religion, instruct them in the Qurʾān, and collect their charitable alms. That was in the year ten, after he sent Khālid b. al-Walīd to them and they embraced Islam. He wrote for him a document containing the shares of inheritance, the customary practices, the charitable alms, and the blood monies. He died in Madinah in the year fifty-one, and it was said: ʿAmr b. Ḥazm died during the caliphate of ʿUmar ؓ, and concerning that there is disagreement mentioned by Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr. He said: Those who narrated from him include his son Muḥammad, al-Naḍr b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Sulamī, and Ziyād b. Nuʿaym al-Ḥaḍramī].
