Translation

✧ His ﷺ sending ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Khāliq ؓ to Byzantium ʿAbd al-Karīm said in the commentary on the sīrah by ʿAbd al-Ghanī: And Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. Yaḥyā b. al-Amīn al-Ṭulayṭilī mentioned it in the book al-Istidrāk ʿalā Abī ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Barr concerning the names of the Companions, from the ḥadīth of Ayyūb b. Nuhayk, from ʿAṭāʾ, who said: I heard Ibn ʿUmar say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Who will take this letter of mine to the tyrant of Byzantium?" He offered that three times. Then he said: "Whoever takes it will have Paradise!" A man from the Anṣār called ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Khāliq stood up and said: "I will take it, and will I have Paradise even if I perish before that?" He said: "You will have Paradise whether you deliver it, or are killed, or perish, for Allah has made Paradise obligatory for you!" He set off with the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he reached the gate of the tyrant. He said: "I am the messenger of the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds." He was granted permission and entered upon him. The tyrant of Byzantium recognized that he had come with the truth from a sent prophet. Then he presented the letter of the Prophet ﷺ. He gathered the Byzantines before him, then presented it to them, and they disliked what he had brought. A man among them believed in it, and he was killed upon his belief. Then the man returned to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what had happened with him and what had happened regarding the killing of the man. The Prophet ﷺ said: "That man will be resurrected as a nation by himself — referring to the one who was killed."
