Chapter mentioning the offspring of Abraham (peace and blessings be upon him)

Translation

✧ And the women talked about the affair of Joseph and the wife of al-ʿAzīz, and the women began saying: “The wife of al-ʿAzīz is soliciting her servant against his will” [12:30]. When she heard of that, she prepared for them food and what they recline upon of cushions, and she gave each one of them a knife [12:31] for cutting the citron. She had seated Joseph in a place other than the place where they were, and she said to him: “Come out to them” – and he came out. When they saw him, they magnified him – and glorified him – and they cut their hands with the knives without feeling it, and they said: “God forbid! This is no human; this is none but a noble angel.” When what befell them of cutting their hands and losing their senses had befallen them, and they recognized their error in what they had said, she confessed against herself and said: “That is the one about whom you blamed me. I did solicit him against his will, but he held back. If he does not do what I command him, he shall surely be imprisoned and shall be among the humiliated.” Joseph chose prison over disobedience to God, so he said: “My Lord, prison is dearer to me than what they call me to. If You do not turn their scheming away from me, I shall incline toward them.” So his Lord answered him and turned their scheming away from him. Then it occurred to al-ʿAzīz, after he had seen the signs of the shirt, the scratching of the face, the testimony of the child, and the women’s cutting of their hands, to leave Joseph released. It is said: She complained to her husband and said: “This servant has disgraced me among the people, telling them that I solicited him against his will.” So he imprisoned him for seven years.
