The Farewell Pilgrimage
Translation
✧ What came down upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of the sublime revelation at this noble station Imam Ahmad said: Jaʿfar b. ʿAwn narrated to us, Abu al-ʿUmays narrated to us, from Qays b. Muslim, from Ṭāriq b. Shihāb, who said: A man from the Jews came to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb and said: O Commander of the Faithful, you recite a verse in your Book; had it been sent down upon us, the company of the Jews, we would have taken that day as a festival. He said: And which verse is it? He said: His saying, Exalted is He: "This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion" (al-Māʾidah: 3). So ʿUmar said: By Allah, I indeed know the day on which it was sent down upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the hour in which it was sent down upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; it was sent down on the evening of ʿArafah on a Friday. Al-Bukhārī narrated it from al-Ḥasan b. al-Ṣabbāḥ, from Jaʿfar b. ʿAwn, and he also related it, as did Muslim, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Nasāʾī, through various routes, from Qays b. Muslim, with it.
