The Farewell Pilgrimage

Translation

✧ (The arrival of ʿAlī to the Prophet ﷺ at al-Abṭaḥ and his finding Fāṭimah having exited ihrām) At this time—while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was encamped at al-Baṭḥāʾ outside Makkah—ʿAlī arrived from Yemen. The Prophet ﷺ had sent him, as we mentioned earlier, to Yemen as commander after Khālid b. al-Walīd, ؓ. When he arrived, he found his wife Fāṭimah bt. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ having exited ihrām, just as the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and those who had not driven sacrificial animals had done; she had applied kohl and worn dyed garments. He said, "Who ordered you to do this?" She said, "My father." He went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in anger over her, and informed him that she had exited ihrām, worn dyed garments, applied kohl, and claimed that you commanded her to do that, O Messenger of Allah. He said, "She spoke the truth, she spoke the truth, she spoke the truth." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "With what did you enter ihrām when you obligated the ḥajj?" He said, "With an ihrām like the ihrām of the Prophet ﷺ." He said, "Indeed, with me is the sacrificial animal, so do not exit ihrām." The total sacrificial animals that ʿAlī brought from Yemen and those the Messenger of Allah ﷺ brought from Madinah and purchased on the way were one hundred camels, and they shared jointly in the sacrificial animals. Abū Mūsā was among those who arrived with ʿAlī, but he had not driven a sacrificial animal, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to exit ihrām after he had performed ṭawāf for the ʿumrah and saʿy, and he abrogated his ḥajj to ʿumrah and became one performing tamattuʿ. He used to issue fatwas to that effect during the caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, but when ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb decided to separate the ḥajj from the ʿumrah, he abandoned his fatwa, out of awe of the Commander of the Believers ʿUmar, ؓ, and to please him. [ʿAlī's army complained about him to the Messenger because he took back from them ḥulal from the cloth of Yemen] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī ʿAmrah narrated to me, from Yazīd b. Ṭalḥah b. Yazīd b. Rukānah, who said: When ʿAlī ؓ returned from Yemen to meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Makkah, he hastened to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and left in charge of his army that was with him a man from his companions. That man proceeded to clothe every man of the people with a ḥullah from the cloth that was with ʿAlī ؓ. When his army drew near, he went out to meet them, and behold, they were wearing the ḥulal. He said, "Woe to you! What is this?" He said, "I clothed the people so that they might adorn themselves when they arrive among the people." He said, "Woe to you! Take it off before you bring it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, "So he took back the ḥulal from the people and returned them to the cloth." He said, "And the army showed its complaint for what had been done to them." Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Maʿmar b. Ḥazm narrated to me, from Sulaymān b. Muḥammad b. Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, from his paternal aunt Zaynab bt. Kaʿb, who was married to Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: The people complained about ʿAlī, ؓ, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us as a speaker, and I heard him say: "O people, do not complain about ʿAlī, for by Allah, he is indeed harsher in the essence of Allah, or in the path of Allah, than to be complained about."
