Translation
✧ The arrival of the delegation of Hamdān [Their names and the speech of Ibn Namaṭ before the Messenger] Ibn Hishām said: The delegation of Hamdān came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, according to what was related to me by one I trust, from ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Udhayna al-ʿAbdī, from Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī, who said: The delegation of Hamdān came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, among them Mālik b. Namaṭ, Abū Thawr—who is Dhū al-Mishʿār—Mālik b. Ayfaʿ, Ḍimām b. Mālik al-Salmānī, and ʿUmayra b. Mālik al-Khārifī. They met the Messenger of God ﷺ upon his return from Tabūk, wearing striped cloaks and Adenese turbans, on fine riding camels and arḥabī camels, while Mālik b. Namaṭ and another man chanted rajaz verses for the people. One of them said: Hamdān is the best of common folk and lords, None in the worlds has their like. Their abode is the highland, and from them come the heroes; They have fine pastures and abundant fodder. The other said: To you we crossed the dark countryside, In the dust-clouds of summer and autumn, With camels muzzled by palm-fiber ropes. Then Mālik b. Namaṭ stood before him and said: O Messenger of God, this is a remnant of Hamdān, from every settled and nomadic group. They came to you on swift young camels, bound by the cords of Islam; no blame of any blamer in the cause of God deters them. From the districts of Khārif, Yām, and Shākir, the people of the highlands and the mountain passes, they answered the call of the Messenger and abandoned the idols and stone altars. Their covenant will not be broken as long as Laʿlaʿ stands and as long as the gazelle runs at Ṣalaʿ. [The Messenger's document of prohibition] The Messenger of God ﷺ wrote for them a document, in which was: In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful. This is a document from the Messenger of God, Muḥammad, for the district of Khārif and the people of the side of the highland and the sand dunes, with their delegate Dhū al-Mishʿār Mālik b. Namaṭ and those of his people who have submitted, on the condition that they shall have its hills and its lowlands as long as they perform the prayer and give the zakāt, eating its fodder and grazing its pastures. They have for that the covenant of God and the protection of His Messenger, and their witnesses are the Emigrants and the Helpers. About that, Mālik b. Namaṭ said: I remembered the Messenger of God in the dark of night, While we were on the heights of Raḥraḥān and Ṣaldad. With us were lean, worn-out camels that sped along, Carrying their riders on a road stretched far. On every long-armed, sturdy she-camel, Passing with us like the swift ostrich. I swore by the Lord of the dancing camels bound for Minā, Returning with riders from the highland of Qardad, That the Messenger of God is confirmed among us, A Messenger who came from the Lord of the Throne, rightly guided. No she-camel ever carried on her saddle, One more severe against his enemies than Muḥammad. He gives when a seeker of favor comes to him, And he strikes with the edge of the polished Indian sword. And from al-Barāʾ, that the Prophet ﷺ sent Khālid b. al-Walīd to the people of Yemen to call them to Islam. Al-Barāʾ said: I was among those who went out with Khālid b. al-Walīd, and we stayed six months calling them to Islam, but they did not respond. Then the Prophet ﷺ sent ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ, and commanded him to recall Khālid, except for any man who was with Khālid who wished to remain with ʿAlī ؓ, let him remain with him. Al-Barāʾ said: I was among those who remained with ʿAlī. When we drew near the people, they came out to us. ʿAlī ؓ prayed with us, then arranged us in a single row, then advanced before us and read to them the letter of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and all of Hamdān submitted. ʿAlī ؓ wrote to the Messenger of God ﷺ informing him of their submission. When the Messenger of God ﷺ read the letter, he fell down in prostration, then raised his head and said: "Peace be upon Hamdān, peace be upon Hamdān."
