عِنْدَ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ عَدِيٌّ: وَخَلَّفْتُ بِنْتًا لِحَاتِمٍ فِي الْحَاضِرِ. وَفِي حَدِيثٍ: جَاءَتْ خَيْلُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَخَذُوا عَمِّي وَنَاسًا. قَالَ: فَلَمَّا قَدِمْتُ الشَّامَ أَقَمْتُ بِهَا وَتُخَالِفُنِي خَيْلٌ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَتُصِيبُ ابْنَةَ حَاتِمٍ فِيمَنْ أَصَابَتْ، فَقُدِمَ بِهَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سَبَايَا مِنْ طَيِّئٍ، وَقَدْ بَلَغَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ هَرَبِي إِلَى الشَّامِ. قَالَ: فَجَعَلَتِ ابْنَةُ حَاتِمٍ فِي حَظِيرَةٍ بِبَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ كَانَتِ السَّبَايَا تُحْبَسُ فِيهَا، فَمَرَّ بِهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَامَتْ إِلَيْهِ، وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَةً جَزْلَةً. وَفِي حَدِيثِ عَلِيٍّ ؓ: لَمَّا أُتِيَ بِسَبَايَا طَيِّئٍ وَقَفَتْ جَارِيَةٌ جَمَّاءُ حَمْرَاءُ، لَعْسَاءُ، ذَلْفَاءُ، عَيْطَاءُ، شَمَّاءُ الْأَنْفِ، مُعْتَدِلَةُ الْقَامَةِ وَالْهَامَةِ، دَرْمَاءُ الْكَعْبَيْنِ، خَدَلَّجَةُ السَّاقَيْنِ، لَفَّاءُ الْفَخْذَيْنِ، حَمِيصَةُ الْخَصْرَيْنِ، ضَامِرَةُ الْكَشْحَيْنِ، مَصْقُولَةُ الْمَتْنَيْنِ. قَالَ: فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُهَا أُعْجِبْتُ بِهَا وَقُلْتُ: لَأَطْلُبَنَّ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ يَجْعَلَهَا فِي فَيْئِي. فَلَمَّا تَكَلَّمَتْ أُنْسِيتُ جَمَالَهَا لِمَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْ فَصَاحَتِهَا. فَقَالَتْ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنْ رَأَيْتَ أَنْ تُخِلِّيَ عَنَّا وَلَا تُشْمِتَ بِنَا أَحْيَاءَ الْعَرَبِ فَإِنِّي ابْنَةُ سَيِّدِ قَوْمِي، وَإِنَّ أَبِي كَانَ يَحْمِي الذِّمَارَ وَيَفُكُّ الْعَانِيَ وَيُشْبِعُ الْجَائِعَ وَيَكْسُو الْعَارِيَ وَيَقْرِي الضَّيْفَ وَيُطْعِمُ الطَّعَامَ وَيُفْشِي السَّلَامَ وَلَمْ يَرُدَّ طَالِبَ حَاجَةٍ قَطُّ، أَنَا ابْنَةُ حَاتِمِ طَيِّئٍ. فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: «يَا جَارِيَةُ هَذِهِ صِفَةُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ حَقًّا، لَوْ كَانَ أَبُوكِ مُسْلِمًا لَتَرَحَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ خَلُّوا عَنْهَا فَإِنَّ أَبَاهَا كَانَ يُحِبُّ مَكَارِمَ الْأَخْلَاقِ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ مَكَارِمَ الْأَخْلَاقِ». وَفِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ: فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، هَلَكَ الْوَالِدُ، وَغَابَ الْوَافِدُ فَامْنُنْ عَلَيَّ مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ. قَالَ: «مَنْ وَافِدُكِ ؟ » قَالَتْ: عَدِيُّ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ. قَالَ: «الْفَارُّ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ». قَالَتْ: ثُمَّ مَضَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَتَرَكَنِي، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ مِنَ الْغَدِ مَرَّ بِي فَقُلْتُ لَهُ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ وَقَالَ لِي مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ بِالْأَمْسِ. قَالَتْ: حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ الْغَدُ مَرَّ بِي وَقَدْ يَئِسْتُ مِنْهُ فَأَشَارَ إِلَيَّ رَجُلٌ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ أَنْ قُومِي فَكَلِّمِيهِ. قَالَتْ: فَقُمْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكَ الْوَالِدُ وَغَابَ الْوَافِدُ فَامْنُنْ عَلَيَّ مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ. فَقَالَ ﷺ: «قَدْ فَعَلْتُ فَلَا تَعْجَلِي بِخُرُوجٍ حَتَّى تَجِدِي مِنْ قَوْمِكِ مَنْ يَكُونُ لَكِ ثِقَةً حَتَّى يُبَلِّغَكِ إِلَى بِلَادِكِ ثُمَّ آذِنِينِي». فَسَأَلْتُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ الَّذِي أَشَارَ إِلَيَّ أَنْ أُكَلِّمَهُ فَقِيلَ عَلَيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ. وَأَقَمْتُ حَتَّى قَدِمَ رَكْبٌ مِنْ بَلِيٍّ أَوْ قُضَاعَةَ. قُلْتُ: وَإِنَّمَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ آتِيَ أَخِي بِالشَّامِ. قَالَتْ: فَجِئْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ قَدِمَ رَهْطٌ مِنْ قَوْمِي لِي فِيهِمْ ثِقَةٌ وَبَلَاغٌ. قَالَتْ: فَكَسَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَحَمَلَنِي وَأَعْطَانِي نَفَقَةً، فَخَرَجْتُ مَعَهُمْ حَتَّى قَدِمْتُ الشَّامَ.
Translation
✧ According to Ibn Isḥāq, ʿAdī said: And I left behind a daughter of Ḥātim in the settlement. And in another ḥadīth: The cavalry of the Messenger of God ﷺ came and took my uncle and some people. He said: When I arrived in Syria I stayed there, and cavalry of the Messenger of God ﷺ encountered me and seized the daughter of Ḥātim among those they seized. She was brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ among captives from Ṭayyiʾ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ had learned that I had fled to Syria. He said: The daughter of Ḥātim was placed in an enclosure by the gate of the mosque where captives were held, and the Messenger of God ﷺ passed by her. She rose to him, for she was a woman of sound judgment. In the ḥadīth of ʿAlī ؓ: When the captives of Ṭayyiʾ were brought, a slave girl stood out, full-figured, fair-skinned, with dark lips, a slightly upturned nose, a long neck, a high nose bridge, a well-proportioned stature and head, full ankles, plump calves, fleshy thighs, slender waist, lean flanks, and smooth back. He said: When I saw her I was impressed by her and said: I must ask the Messenger of God ﷺ to place her among my share of the spoils. But when she spoke I forgot her beauty because of the eloquence I heard from her. She said: O Muḥammad, if you see fit to release us and not gloat over us before the Arab tribes, then I am the daughter of the chief of my people. My father used to protect those under his charge, free the captive, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, entertain the guest, give food, spread peace, and never turn away a seeker of need. I am the daughter of Ḥātim al-Ṭāʾī. The Prophet ﷺ said: "O girl, these are truly the qualities of the believers. If your father had been a Muslim we would have asked mercy for him. Release her, for her father loved noble character, and God loves noble character." And in the ḥadīth of Ibn Isḥāq: She said: O Messenger of God, the father has perished and the envoy is absent, so show me favor as God has shown favor to you. He said: "Who is your envoy?" She said: ʿAdī b. Ḥātim. He said: "The one who fled from God and His Messenger." She said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ departed and left me, until when it was the next day he passed by me and I said to him the same thing, and he said to me the same as he had said yesterday. She said: Until when it was the third day he passed by me, and I had despaired of him, when a man behind him gestured to me: Rise and speak to him. She said: So I rose to him and said: O Messenger of God, the father has perished and the envoy is absent, so show me favor as God has shown favor to you. He ﷺ said: "I have done so, but do not hasten to depart until you find from your people someone you trust to convey you to your land; then inform me." I asked about the man who gestured to me to speak to him, and it was said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ. I stayed until riders from Balī or Quḍāʿah arrived. She said: I only wanted to go to my brother in Syria. She said: So I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, a group of my people has arrived in whom I have trust and conveyance. She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ clothed me, provided me with a mount, and gave me provisions. Then I departed with them until I reached Syria.
