Mention of Year Nine and Its Designation as the Year of Delegations

Translation

✧ The affair of ʿAdī b. Ḥātim [His flight to Syria, escaping from the Messenger] As for ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, he used to say, according to what has reached me: There was no man among the Arabs more intensely averse to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he heard of him than I. As for me, I was a noble man, and I was a Christian, and I used to go among my people taking a fourth of the spoils, and I was in myself upon a religion, and I was a king among my people because of what was done for me. So when I heard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ I disliked him, and I said to a servant of mine, an Arab who was a herdsman of my camels: May you have no father, prepare for me from my camels some docile, fat riding camels, and keep them close to me, and when you hear of an army of Muḥammad that has set foot in these lands, then inform me. So he did. Then he came to me one morning and said: O ʿAdī, whatever you were going to do when the cavalry of Muḥammad overtook you, do it now, for I have seen banners, and I asked about them, and they said: These are the armies of Muḥammad. He said: So I said: Bring my camels near to me. So he brought them near, and I loaded my family and children, then I said: I will join the people of my religion, the Christians, in Syria. So I took the Jawshiyya route — and it is also said al-Ḥawshiyya, according to what Ibn Hishām said — and I left behind a daughter of Ḥātim in the settlement. When I reached Syria I stayed there.
