Translation
✧ Delegations of Ṭayyiʾ with Zayd al-Khayl to him ﷺ Ibn Saʿd narrated from Abū ʿUmayr al-Ṭāʾī, who was the orphan of al-Zuhrī, and from ʿUbādah al-Ṭāʾī from their elders, that they said: The delegation of Ṭayyiʾ came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, fifteen men, their head and chief being Zayd al-Khayr, who is Zayd al-Khayl b. Muhalhil of Banū Nabhān. Among them were Wazar b. Jābir b. Sadūs, Qabīṣah b. al-Aswad b. ʿĀmir of Jarm Ṭayyiʾ, Mālik b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khaybarī of Banū Maʿn, Quʿayn b. Khulayf of Jadīlah, and a man of Banū Bawlān. They entered Madinah while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in the mosque. They hobbled their riding camels at the courtyard of the mosque, then entered and drew near to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He presented Islam to them, and they became Muslims and their Islam was good. He gave each of them a gift of five ounces of silver, and he gave Zayd al-Khayl twelve ounces and a nashsh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No man of the Arabs has been mentioned to me but that I saw him as less than what was mentioned of him, except Zayd al-Khayl, for he did not attain all that was in him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ named him Zayd al-Khayr, granted him Fayd and lands, wrote a document for him to that effect, and he returned with his people. In another wording: He departed with it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returning to his people, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If Zayd is preserved from the fever of Madinah, then indeed he—" Some commentators said the apodosis of 'If he is preserved' is omitted, and the intended meaning is: then indeed he will not be faulted. He said: In Zād al-Maʿād and al-ʿUyūn, when he sensed death he began reciting: Will my people depart for the eastern lands in the morning, while I remain in a house at Fardah, going to Najd? Would that there were a day when, if I fell ill, those who visited me would be visitors from whom he would not recover despite effort. When he reached from the land of Najd to one of its waters called Fardah—in another wording Fard—fever struck him there and he died there. His wife, in her ignorance and lack of reason, took what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had written for him and burned it with fire. Ibn Durayd mentioned from Abū Muḥsin that Zayd stayed at Fardah for three days and died. Qabīṣah b. al-Aswad performed the lamentation over him for a year, then sent his riding camel and saddle, in which was the letter of the Prophet ﷺ. When his wife saw the riding camel without Zayd upon it, she set it ablaze with fire, and it burned along with the letter. Al-Shaykhān narrated from Abū Saʿīd [al-Khudrī] ؓ that ʿAlī, may Allah honor his face, "sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Yemen a small piece of gold in tanned leather not yet refined from its dust, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided it among four men: ʿUyaynah b. Badr, al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis, Zayd al-Khayl, and ʿAlqamah b. Ghaylān." Shāhīn and Ibn ʿAdī—and he said it is rejected—and Ibn ʿAsākir, with the wording from both of them, narrated from ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd ؓ who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a rider approached, made his camel kneel, and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have come to you from a journey of nine days, having exhausted my riding camel, kept awake my nights, and made thirsty my days to ask you about two matters that keep me awake. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What is your name?" He said: I am Zayd al-Khayl. He said: "Rather, you are Zayd al-Khayr. Ask, for many a difficult matter has been asked about." He said: I ask you about the sign of Allah regarding one whom He wills, and His sign regarding one whom He does not will. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "How have you entered the morning?" He said: I have entered the morning loving good and its people and those who act upon it; if I act upon it, I am certain of its reward, and if something of it escapes me, I long for it. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "This is the sign of Allah regarding one whom He wills, and His sign regarding one whom He does not will. Had He willed for you the right guidance, He would have prepared you for it, and then you would not care in which valley it perished." In another wording: "in which valley it traveled." Abū Nuʿaym narrated in al-Ḥilyah from him that a man said: O Messenger of Allah, I ask you about the sign of Allah regarding one whom He wills, and His sign regarding one whom He does not will. Ibn Saʿd narrated from elders of Ṭayyiʾ who said: ʿAmr b. al-Musabbiḥ b. Kaʿb b. Ṭarīf b. ʿAṣar al-Ṭāʾī came to the Prophet ﷺ, and on that day he was one hundred and fifty years old. He asked him about hunting, and he said to him: "Eat what you have pierced and leave what you have struck with a blunt object," and he was among the most skilled archers of the Arabs.
