Mention of Year Nine and Its Designation as the Year of Delegations
Translation
✧ A mounted party from Banū Tamīm came to the Prophet ﷺ, and Abū Bakr said: Appoint al-Qaʿqāʿ b. Maʿbad b. Zurārah as commander. ʿUmar said: Rather, appoint al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis. Abū Bakr said: You intend nothing but to oppose me. ʿUmar said: I did not intend to oppose you. They argued until their voices rose, and it was revealed: “O you who believe, do not put [yourselves] forward before Allah and His Messenger” (al-Ḥujurāt: 1) until it was completed. Al-Bukhārī also narrated it from more than one route, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah with other wordings; we have mentioned that in the “Tafsīr” at His saying, Exalted is He: “O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet,” the verse. Ibn Isḥāq said: And concerning them was revealed from the Qurʾān His saying, Exalted is He: “Indeed, those who call you from behind the chambers—most of them do not understand. And if they had been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” Ibn Jarīr said, on the authority of al-Barāʾ, regarding His saying: “Indeed, those who call you from behind the chambers,” he said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Muḥammad, indeed my praise is an adornment and my blame is a disgrace. He said: That is Allah, Mighty and Majestic. This is a good, connected chain. It has been narrated from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī and Qatādah as mursal from both of them. The naming of this man has occurred; Imām Aḥmad said: ʿAffān narrated to us, Wuḥayb narrated to us, Mūsā b. ʿUqbah narrated to us, from Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis, that he called the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Muḥammad, O Muḥammad—and in one narration: O Messenger of Allah—but he did not answer him. Then he said: O Messenger of Allah, indeed my praise is surely an adornment, and indeed my blame is surely a disgrace. He said: “That is Allah, Mighty and Majestic.” And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, and he said: “They are the coarse Bedouins of Banū Tamīm. Were it not that they are among the severest of people in fighting the one-eyed Dajjāl, I would have called upon Allah against them to destroy them.”
