Translation
✧ [The poetry of Ibn al-Ahtam in satirizing Qays for belittling him] ʿAmr b. al-Ahtam had been left behind by the people among their baggage, and he was the youngest of them in age. Qays b. ʿĀṣim, who disliked ʿAmr b. al-Ahtam, said: O Messenger of God, there was a man of ours in our camp, and he is a young lad; and he disparaged him. So the Messenger of God ﷺ gave him the like of what he gave the people. He said that Qays said that satirizing him: ʿAmr b. al-Ahtam when it reached him I remained spreading out the hairless one while you reviled me before the Messenger, and you did not speak truth nor hit the mark. We have attained leadership over you, a quiet leadership, while your leadership shows its molars, squatting on the tail. And from Muḥammad b. al-Zubayr al-Ḥanẓalī, he said: Al-Zibriqān b. Badr, Qays b. ʿĀṣim, and ʿAmr b. al-Ahtam came to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said to ʿAmr b. al-Ahtam: "Tell me about al-Zibriqān; as for this one, I am not asking you about him." And I think he had already known Qays. He said: So he said: Obeyed among his nearest, strong in argument, a defender of what is behind his back. Al-Zibriqān said: He has said what he said while knowing that I am better than what he said. He said: So ʿAmr said: By God, I have not known you except as feeble in manliness, narrow of resting place, foolish of father, base of maternal uncle. Then he said: O Messenger of God, I have spoken truth about both of them together; he pleased me, so I said the best of what I know about him, and he angered me, so I said the worst of what I know about him. He said: So the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Indeed, some eloquence is magic."
