Mention of Year Nine and Its Designation as the Year of Delegations

✧ Poetry of al-Zibriqān in Boasting of His People Al-Zibriqān b. Badr stood and said: We are the noble ones; no tribe equals us. From us are kings, and among us churches are erected, And how many of all the tribes have we subdued At the time of plunder, and the bounty of might is followed. We feed at the time of famine; our feeder gives Of roasted meat when no small clouds are seen. As you see, their chiefs come to us From every land with longing, then they are favored. We slaughter the humped camels without blemish in our origin For the guests; when they alight, they are satiated. You do not see us boasting against any tribe But they gained [from us], and they were a head that is severed. So whoever boasts against us in that, we know him, And the people return while the reports are listened to. Indeed we refused, and no one refuses for us; Indeed we are thus at boasting elevated. Ibn Hishām said: It is also narrated: "From us are kings, and among us the quarter is divided," and it is narrated: "From every land our desire [comes], then we are followed." Some of Banū Tamīm narrated it to me, and most of the people of knowledge in poetry deny that it is by al-Zibriqān. Poetry of Hassān in Response to al-Zibriqān Ibn Isḥāq said: Hassān was absent, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for him. Hassān said: His messenger came to me and informed me that he had summoned me only to answer the poet of Banū Tamīm. So I went out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: We defended the Messenger of Allah when he alighted among us Against a nose, willing or unwilling, of Maʿadd, We defended him when he alighted among our homes With our swords from every transgressor and oppressor, In a secluded house, whose might and wealth are his, In Jābiyat al-Jawlān, in the midst of the non-Arabs. Is glory but ancient lordship and generosity, The esteem of kings and the bearing of great matters? He said: When I reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the poet of the people stood and said what he said, I turned to his words and spoke in the manner of what he said. He said: When al-Zibriqān finished, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Hassān b. Thābit: "Rise, O Hassān, and answer the man in what he said." So Hassān stood and said: Indeed the forelocks of Fihr and their brothers Have made clear a way for people to be followed. Everyone whose inner self is pleasing to them Is piety to the God, and every good they do. A people who, when they fight, harm their enemy, Or when they seek benefit for their followers, they benefit. That is a nature of theirs, not newly invented; Indeed, know that the worst of traits are innovations. If among people there are those who race after them, Then every race follows their lesser race. People do not patch what their hands have weakened At the time of defense, nor do they weaken what they have patched. If they race with people one day, their racing wins, Or if they weigh people of glory with generosity, they excel. Chaste are they, whose chastity is mentioned in the revelation; They are not stamped, nor does greed destroy them. They are not stingy to a neighbor with their bounty, Nor does any stain of greed touch them. When we set up [a tent] for a tribe, we do not creep toward them As the arm of a wild beast creeps toward its prey. We soar when war's claws reach us, When the riffraff of its nails cower. They do not boast when they attain their enemy, And if they are struck, they are not weak or terrified. As if they in the battle, while death engulfs, Are lions in an ornament, in their pasterns trailing [garments]. Take from them what comes spontaneously when they are angry, And let not your concern be the matter they have forbidden. For in their war—so abandon enmity to them— Is an evil over which poison and aloe are stirred. Honor a people whose partisans are the Messenger of Allah, When desires and factions differ. My praise is guided to them; a heart aids it In what I love; an eloquent, skillful tongue. Indeed they are the best of all tribes, If people engage in seriousness of speech or they sing. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd recited to me: Everyone whose inner self is pleasing by it Is piety to the God and by the command which they legislated. Another Poem by al-Zibriqān Ibn Hishām said: Some of the people of knowledge in poetry from Banū Tamīm told me that al-Zibriqān b. Badr, when he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the delegation of Banū Tamīm, stood and said: We came to you so that people may know our excellence When they gather at the time of the assemblies, That we are the branches of people in every place, And that there is not in the land of the Hijaz like Dārim, And that we drive away the branded ones when they call, And we strike the head of the haughty, great-necked one, And that we have the fourth part in every raid We launch in Najd or in the land of the non-Arabs. Another Poem by Hassān in Response to al-Zibriqān Hassān b. Thābit stood and answered him, saying: Is glory but ancient lordship and generosity, The esteem of kings and the bearing of great matters? We aided and sheltered the Prophet Muhammad Against a nose, willing or unwilling, of Maʿadd, In a secluded tribe, whose origin and wealth are his, In Jābiyat al-Jawlān, in the midst of the non-Arabs. We aided him when he alighted in the midst of our homes With our swords from every transgressor and oppressor. We placed our sons before him and our daughters, And we were content in ourselves with the spoils of war. We struck the people until they followed one another Upon his religion with sharp, cutting swords. We gave birth from Quraysh to its great one; We gave birth to the Prophet of good from the family of Hāshim. O Banū Dārim, do not boast; indeed your boasting Returns as a burden at the mention of noble deeds. Have you lost your minds, boasting against us while you Are to us servants, between a wet nurse and a slave? If you have come to spare your blood And your wealth from being divided in the divisions, Then do not make rivals to Allah, and submit, And do not wear a garb like the garb of the non-Arabs. Their Conversion to Islam and the Messenger's Gifts to Them Ibn Isḥāq said: When Hassān b. Thābit finished his words, al-Aqraʿ b. Hābis said: By my father, this man is indeed favored; his orator is more eloquent than our orator, and his poet is more poetic than our poet, and their voices are sweeter than our voices. When the people finished, they embraced Islam, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave them gifts, and he gave them excellent gifts.
