The Pilgrimage of Abū Bakr with the People
فِي سَنَةِ تِسْعٍ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ حَجَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ بِالنَّاسِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى مَنَازِلِهِمْ وَالْمُشْرِكِينَ عَلَى مَنَازِلِهِمْ، وَفِي أَثْنَاءِ ذَلِكَ نَزَلَتْ سُورَةُ بَرَاءَةٌ، وَأَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلِيًّا أَنْ يُؤَدِّيَهَا عَنْهُ فَيَقْرَأَهَا عَلَى النَّاسِ فِي الْحَجِّ، وَأَخْبَرَ ﷺ أَنَّهُ لَا يُؤَدِّيهَا إِلَّا هُوَ أَوْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ آلِ بَيْتِهِ. فَقَرَأَهَا عَلِيٌّ عَلَى النَّاسِ فِي مَوَاطِنِ الْحَجِّ، وَفِي هَذِهِ السُّورَةِ نَزَلَ بَرَاءَةُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ مِنْ عَهْدِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَأَنَّ مَنْ كَانَ لَهُ عَهْدٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَعَهْدُهُ إِلَى مُدَّتِهِ. كَمَا أَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ يُنَادَى أَلَّا يَحُجَّ بَعْدَ الْعَامِ مُشْرِكٌ وَلَا يَطُوفَ بِالْبَيْتِ عُرْيَانٌ.
Translation
✧ In the year nine of the Hijrah, Abū Bakr ؓ performed the pilgrimage with the Muslim people according to their rites and the polytheists according to their rites. During that, Sūrat Barāʾah was revealed, and the Prophet ﷺ commanded ʿAlī to convey it on his behalf and recite it to the people during the pilgrimage. He ﷺ informed that none would convey it except him or a man from his household. So ʿAlī recited it to the people at the stations of the pilgrimage. In this sūrah came the declaration of immunity of Allah and His Messenger from the covenant of the polytheists, and that whoever had a covenant with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his covenant remained until its term. As the Prophet ﷺ also commanded it to be proclaimed that no polytheist should perform pilgrimage after that year and no one should circumambulate the House naked.
