What Has Been Reported Regarding the Arrival of the Thaqīf Delegation to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Their Conversion
قَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: وَكَانَ كِتَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ الَّذِي كَتَبَ لَهُمْ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ إِلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ; إِنَّ عِضَاةَ وَجٍّ وَصَيْدَهُ لَا يُعْضَدُ، مَنْ وَجَدَ يَفْعَلُ شَيْئًا مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَإِنَّهُ يُجْلَدُ وَتُنْزَعُ ثِيَابُهُ، وَإِنْ تَعَدَّى ذَلِكَ فَإِنَّهُ يُؤْخَذُ فَيُبْلَغُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ مُحَمَّدًا، وَإِنَّ هَذَا أَمْرُ النَّبِيِّ مُحَمَّدٍ. وَكَتَبَ خَالِدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ بِأَمْرِ الرَّسُولِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَلَا يَتَعَدَّهُ أَحَدٌ فَيَظْلِمَ نَفْسَهُ فِيمَا أَمَرَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ.. وَقَدْ قَالَ الْإِمَامُ أَحْمَدُ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ - مِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ مَخْزُومِيٌّ - حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ إِنْسَانَ - وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا - عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: أَقْبَلْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ لِيَةَ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا عِنْدَ السِّدْرَةِ وَقَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي طَرَفِ الْقَرْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ حَذْوَهَا، فَاسْتَقْبَلَ نَخِبًا بِبَصَرِهِ، يَعْنِي وَادِيًا، وَوَقَفَ حَتَّى اتَّقَفَ النَّاسُ كُلُّهُمْ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " إِنَّ صَيْدَ وَجٍّ وَعِضَاهَهُ حَرَمٌ مُحَرَّمٌ لِلَّهِ ". وَذَلِكَ قَبْلَ نُزُولِهِ الطَّائِفَ وَحِصَارِهِ ثَقِيفًا.
Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: The document of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ which he wrote for them was: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muḥammad the Prophet, the Messenger of Allah, to the believers. The thorny trees of Wajj and its game shall not be cut down. Whoever is found doing any of that shall be flogged and his clothes stripped off. If he transgresses beyond that, he shall be seized and brought to the Prophet Muḥammad. This is the command of the Prophet Muḥammad." Khālid b. Saʿīd wrote it by the command of the Messenger Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh. Let no one transgress it, lest he wrong himself in what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded. Imam Aḥmad said: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith — from the people of Makkah, a Makhzūmī — narrated to us: Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Insān narrated to me — and he praised him highly — from his father, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, from his father, who said: We returned with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Liyah until when we were at the lote tree, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped at the edge of the black horn opposite it, and he faced Nakhb with his gaze — meaning a valley — and he stopped until all the people came to a halt. Then he said: "The game of Wajj and its thorny trees are a sacred sanctuary, made forbidden by Allah." That was before he descended to al-Ṭāʾif and besieged Thaqīf.
