✧ [THE DEMOLITION OF THE IDOL] Ibn Isḥāq said: When they had completed their business and set out to return to their lands, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb and al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah with them to demolish the idol (al-ṭāghiyah). They departed with the people, and when they reached al-Ṭāʾif, al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah wanted to send Abū Sufyān ahead, but Abū Sufyān refused that, saying: "You enter upon your people yourself." Abū Sufyān stayed at his property at Dhū al-Hadm. When al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah entered, he climbed it and began striking it with the pickaxe, while his people, the Banū Muʿattib, stood in front of him, fearing that he might be shot or struck as ʿUrwah had been struck. The women of Thaqīf came out bareheaded, weeping over it and saying: They will indeed weep for the defender who surrendered her to the sucklings, who did not fight well. Ibn Hishām said: "They will indeed weep" - from other than Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Sufyān was saying while al-Mughīrah struck it with the axe: "Alas for you, ah for you!" When al-Mughīrah had demolished it and taken its wealth and its ornaments, he sent to Abū Sufyān its ornaments gathered together, and its wealth of gold and onyx. Mūsā b. ʿUqbah mentioned that the delegation of Thaqīf consisted of some ten men. When they arrived, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lodged them in the mosque so that they might hear the Qur'an. They asked him about usury, fornication, and wine, and he prohibited all of that. They asked him about the goddess, what he would do with her. He said: "Demolish her." They said: "Far from it! If the goddess knew that you intended to demolish her, she would kill her people." Then ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: "Woe to you, O son of ʿAbd Yālīl! How ignorant you are! The goddess is only a stone." They said: "We did not come to you, O son of al-Khaṭṭāb." Then they said: "O Messenger of Allah, you undertake her demolition yourself; as for us, we will never demolish her." He said: "I will send to you someone who will suffice you in demolishing her." So they made a written agreement with him on that, and they asked his permission to precede his messengers to them. When they came to their people, they met them and asked: "What is behind you?" They showed grief and said that they had come from a harsh and rough man who had prevailed by the sword, who judged as he wished, who had subdued the Arabs, who had prohibited usury, fornication, and wine, and who commanded the demolition of the goddess. So Thaqīf became averse and said: "We will never obey this." He said: "Prepare for battle and ready the weapons." They remained in that state for two or three days. Then Allah cast terror into their hearts, and they returned and repented, saying: "Go back to him and make conditions with him on that, and make peace with him on it." They said: "We have indeed done that, and we found him the most pious, the most faithful, the most merciful, and the most truthful of people. We and you have been blessed in our journey to him and in what we stipulated with him. So understand what is in the agreement and accept Allah's well-being." They said: "Why did you conceal this from us at first?" They said: "We wanted Allah to remove from your hearts the pride of Satan." So they embraced Islam on the spot and remained for some days. Then the messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them, and he had appointed Khālid b. al-Walīd as commander over them, and among them was al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah. They proceeded to al-Lāt, and Thaqīf, men, women, and children, had gathered around it, even the young women came out from their chambers. The majority of Thaqīf did not think that it would be demolished, and they supposed that it was invulnerable. Al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah stood up, took the pickaxe (kirzīn) - meaning the maʿwal - and said to his companions: "By Allah, I will make you laugh at Thaqīf." He struck with the pickaxe, then fell down kicking his foot. The people of al-Ṭāʾif resounded with a single cry and rejoiced, saying: "May Allah distance al-Mughīrah! The goddess has killed him." They said to those others: "Whoever of you wishes, let him come near." Then al-Mughīrah stood up and said: "By Allah, O assembly of Thaqīf, she is but a worthless thing of stones and mud. So accept Allah's well-being and worship Him." Then he struck the door and broke it, then climbed its wall, and the men climbed with him, and they kept demolishing it stone by stone until they leveled it with the ground. Its custodian kept saying: "The foundation will be angry and will swallow them up." When al-Mughīrah heard that, he said to Khālid: "Let me dig up its foundation." So they dug it up until they brought out its earth and collected its water and its building materials. At that, Thaqīf was confounded. Then they returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he divided its wealth that same day. They praised Allah, exalted be He, for the strengthening of His religion and the victory of His Messenger.
