The Expedition of Tabūk
ذِكْرُ إِخْبَارِهِ ﷺ بِمَوْتِ عَظِيمٍ مِنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لَمَّا هَبَّتْ رِيحٌ شَدِيدَةٌ قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: وَهَاجَتْ رِيحٌ شَدِيدَةٌ بِتَبُوكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ "هَذَا لِمَوْتِ مُنَافِقٍ عَظِيمِ النِّفَاقِ" فَقَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ فَوَجَدُوا مُنَافِقًا عَظِيمَ النِّفَاقَ قَدْ مَاتَ. وَرَوَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ عَنْ شُيُوخِهِ، قَالُوا: " قَدِمَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَفَرٌ مِنْ سَعْدِ هُذَيْمٍ فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّا قَدِمْنَا إِلَيْكَ وَتَرَكْنَا أَهْلَنَا عَلَى بِئْرٍ لَنَا قَلِيلٍ مَاؤُهَا، وَهَذَا الْقَيْظِ، وَنَحْنُ نَخَافُ إِنْ تَفَرَّقْنَا أَنْ نُقْتَطَعَ، لِأَنَّ الْإِسْلَامَ لَمْ يَفْشُ حَوْلَنَا بَعْدُ، فَادْعُ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى لَنَا فِي مَائِهَا، فَإِنَّا إِنْ رَوَيْنَا بِهِ فَلَا قَوْمَ أَعَزُّ مِنَّا لَا يَعْبُرُ بِنَا أَحَدٌ مُخَالِفٌ لِدِينِنَا. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ابْغُوا لِي حَصَيَاتٍ فَتَنَاوَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ ثَلَاثَ حَصَيَاتٍ فَدَفَعَهُنَّ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَفَرَكَهُنَّ بِيَدِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: اذْهَبُوا بِهَذِهِ الْحَصَيَاتِ إِلَى بِئْرِكُمْ فَاطْرَحُوهَا وَاحِدَةً وَاحِدَةً وَسَمُّوا اللَّهَ تَعَالَى فَانْصَرَفَ الْقَوْمُ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَفَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ، فَجَاشَتْ بِئْرُهُمْ بِالرِّوَاءِ، وَنَفَوْا مَنْ قَارَبَهُمْ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشِّرْكِ وَوَطِئُوهُمْ فَمَا انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ حَتَّى أَوْطَئُوا مِنْ حَوْلِهِمْ غَلَبَةً وَدَانُوا عَلَيْهِ بِالْإِسْلَامِ.
Translation
✧ Mention of his ﷺ informing of the death of a great one among the hypocrites when a severe wind blew Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said: A severe wind stirred at Tabūk, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said, “This is for the death of a hypocrite of great hypocrisy.” Then they arrived in Madinah and found that a hypocrite of great hypocrisy had died. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar related from his shaykhs, who said: A group of men from Saʿd Hudhaym came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of God, we have come to you after leaving our families at a well of ours whose water is scant, and this is the hot season. We fear that if we disperse we shall be cut off, because Islam has not yet spread around us. So supplicate God Almighty for us concerning its water, for if we are watered by it, no people will be mightier than us; no one opposing our religion will pass through us.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Bring me some small pebbles.” One of them took three small pebbles and handed them to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He rubbed them with his hand, then said: “Go with these pebbles to your well and throw them in one by one, invoking the name of God Almighty.” The people departed from the Messenger of God ﷺ and did that, and their well overflowed with abundant water. They expelled those of the people of polytheism who drew near to them and subdued them. The Messenger of God ﷺ did not return to Madinah until they had subdued those around them with dominance and made them submit to Islam.
