The Expedition of Tabūk
Translation
✧ What is mentioned concerning a great serpent that confronted the people during their march, if the report is authentic. Muhammad b. ʿUmar mentioned it, and Abū Nuʿaym affirmed it in al-Dalāʾil, Ibn Kathīr in al-Bidāyah, and our shaykh in al-Khaṣāʾiṣ al-Kubrā. He said: A serpent confronted the people during their march—he mentioned its great size and form—so the people turned away from it. It came forward until it stopped before the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was on his mount for a long time, and the people were looking at it. Then it twisted until it moved to the side of the road and stood erect. The people came forward until they caught up with the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said, "Do you know who this is?" They said, "God and His Messenger know best." He said, "This is one of the eight jinn who came to me to listen to the Qurʾān. He saw it as a duty upon him—when the Messenger of God ﷺ approached him—to greet him. Here he is conveying peace to you, so greet him." So all the people said, "And upon him be peace, and God's mercy, and His blessings."
