Translation

✧ Mention of the killing of Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah Ibn Isḥāq, Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, and others said: When God—Exalted is He—routed Hawāzin, they came to al-Ṭāʾif, and with them was Mālik b. ʿAwf. Some of them encamped at Awṭās, and some turned toward Nakhlat Banī ʿAyrah of Thaqīf. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent cavalry to pursue those who took the Nakhlah route, but they did not pursue those who took the mountain passes. Rabīʿah b. Rufayʿ b. Uhbān b. Thaʿlabah of Banū Sulaym overtook Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah. He seized the halter of his camel, thinking he was a woman, because he was in a howdah. Then he found he was a man, so he made him kneel, and he was a very old man, one hundred and sixty years old. Then he saw it was Durayd, but the youth did not recognize him. Durayd said to him, "What do you want?" He said, "To kill you." He said, "What do you want with a trembling, perishing old man?" The youth said, "I want nothing but that." Durayd said to him, "Who are you?" He said, "I am Rabīʿah b. Rufayʿ al-Sulamī." He said, "Then he struck him, but it availed nothing." Durayd said, "How poorly your mother armed you. Take my sword from behind the saddle in the howdah, and strike with it, and raise it above the bone and lower it below the brain, for thus I used to kill men. Then when you come to your mother, tell her that you killed Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah, for many a day I protected your women." Banū Sulaym claimed that when Rabīʿah struck him and he fell, he was exposed in death, and his perineum and the inner parts of his thighs were like parchment from riding horses. When Rabīʿah returned to his mother, he told her that he had killed him. She said, "By God, he freed three of your mothers in a single morning, and he clipped the forelock of your father." The youth said, "I did not know." Ibn Hishām said: It is said that the name of the one who killed Durayd was ʿAbd Allāh b. Qunayʿ b. Uhbān b. Thaʿlabah b. Rabīʿah. ʿAmrah bt. Durayd said concerning Rabīʿah's killing of Durayd: By your life, I did not fear for Durayd in the belly of Sumayrah the army of al-ʿAnāq May God reward Banū Sulaym for him, and may He requite them for what they did with disobedience And He gave us to drink, when we drove to them, the blood of their best men at the meeting Many a great matter you warded off from them when their souls had reached the collarbones Many a noble woman you freed of theirs, and another you released from bonds Many a one of Sulaym who called upon you you answered, when he called you almost lifeless So our recompense from them was ingratitude a grief from which the marrow of my shin melted The traces of your horses were effaced, after a time, at Dhū Baqar as far as Fayf al-Nuhāq And ʿAmrah bt. Durayd also said: They said, "We killed Durayd." I said, "They have spoken truly," so my tears kept flowing upon the garment Were it not for the One who subdued all peoples, Sulaym and Kaʿb would have seen how matters are decided Then a numerous, mighty host would have come upon them in the evening and in the morning wherever their abode settled
