The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)
Translation
✧ Mention of the rout of the polytheists and the prohibition against killing their offspring Muḥammad b. ʿUmar—may God Almighty have mercy on him—said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ called out to the Anṣār, “Turn back, returning!” they began to say: “O Banū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, O Banū ʿAbd Allāh, O Banū ʿUbayd Allāh, O cavalry of God.” The Messenger of God ﷺ had named his cavalry “the cavalry of God,” and he made the battle cry of the Muhājirūn “Banū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān,” and he made the battle cry of the Aws “Banū ʿUbayd Allāh,” and the battle cry of the Khazraj “Banū ʿAbd Allāh.” Muḥammad b. ʿUmar related from Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ṣaʿṣaʿah: That Saʿd b. ʿUbādah kept shouting that day, “O Khazraj!” three times, and Usayd b. al-Ḥuḍayr kept shouting, “O Aws!” three times, and they rallied from every direction like bees returning to their leader. The scholars of the military expeditions said: The Muslims were filled with rage against the polytheists and killed them until the killing extended to the offspring of the polytheists. News of that reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: “What is the matter with people whose killing has gone so far that it has reached the offspring! Verily, do not kill the offspring; verily, do not kill the offspring” three times. Usayd b. al-Ḥuḍayr said: “O Messenger of God, are they not the children of the polytheists?” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Are not the best of you the children of the polytheists! Every soul is born upon the natural disposition until its tongue expresses for it, and its parents make it a Jew or a Christian.” The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that it is among the distinctive qualities of prophethood that he does not gesture. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: The elders of Thaqīf said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ continued pursuing us, as we saw it—while we were in retreat—until one of us would enter the fortress of al-Ṭāʾif while thinking that he was right on his heels, out of the terror of the rout.” Anas b. Mālik said, as related by Imām Aḥmad: Among the polytheists there was a man who charged at us and crushed us and shattered us. When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw that, he dismounted, and God—Exalted is He—routed them and they fled. The Messenger of God ﷺ stood up when he saw the victory, and the captives began to be brought to him one by one, and they pledged allegiance to him upon Islam. A man among the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “I have made a vow that if the man who has been shattering us since today is brought, I will strike his neck.” The Messenger of God ﷺ remained silent. The man was brought, and when he saw the Messenger of God ﷺ, he said: “O Prophet of God, I repent to God.” The Messenger of God ﷺ withheld his pledge of allegiance in order that the vow-maker might fulfill his vow. He kept looking at the Messenger of God ﷺ for him to order his execution, but the Messenger of God ﷺ was cautious. When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw that the man was not doing anything, he accepted his pledge of allegiance. The man said: “O Messenger of God, what about my vow?” He said: “I only withheld from him so that you might fulfill your vow.” He said: “O Messenger of God, why did you not gesture to me?” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “It is not for a prophet to gesture.” Al-Bazzār related with a chain whose men are trustworthy, from Anas ؓ, that the Messenger of God ﷺ said on the day of Ḥunayn: “Slaughter them like slaughtering camels,” and he gestured with his hand toward the throat. Honoring the Prophet ﷺ for his foster sister Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: The Messenger of God ﷺ ordered the pursuit of the enemy and said to his cavalry: “If you capture Bijād, a man of Banū Saʿd b. Bakr, let him not escape from you.” He had committed a grave crime: a Muslim man had come to him, and he seized him and cut him limb by limb, then burned him with fire. He knew his crime, so he fled. The cavalry seized him and brought him to al-Shaymāʾ bt. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, the foster sister of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and they exhausted her in driving him. Al-Shaymāʾ became exhausted because of their exhaustion, and she kept saying: “By God, I am the sister of your companion,” but they did not believe her. A group of the Anṣār took her—and they were the severest of people against Hawāzin—and brought her to the Messenger of God ﷺ. She said: “O Muḥammad! I am your sister.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “What is the sign of that?” She showed him a bite mark on her thumb and said: “A bite you gave me while I was carrying you on my hip in the valley of al-Surar, when we were that day tending the lambs. Your father is my father, and your mother is my mother, and I vied with you for the breast. Remember, O Messenger of God, my milking for you the goats of your father, milking them at dawn.” The Messenger of God ﷺ recognized the sign, and he sprang up, spread his cloak, then said: “Sit on it,” and he welcomed her, and his eyes welled with tears. He asked her about his mother and his father, and she informed him of their death. He said: “If you wish, stay with us, loved and honored, and if you wish to return to your people, I will maintain ties with you and you may return to your people.” She said: “Rather, I return to my people.” She embraced Islam, and the Messenger of God ﷺ gave her three male slaves and a female slave, and ordered for her a camel or two camels. He said to her: “Return to al-Jiʿrānah and be with your people, for I am going to al-Ṭāʾif.” She returned to al-Jiʿrānah, and the Messenger of God ﷺ met her at al-Jiʿrānah and gave her camels and sheep, and to those who remained of her household. She spoke to him regarding Bijād, asking him to grant him to her and pardon him, and he did so—ﷺ. Section: The rout of Hawāzin When Hawāzin were routed, their king Mālik b. ʿAwf al-Naṣrī stood on a mountain pass with a group of his companions and said: “Stand firm until your weak ones pass and your rear guard catches up.” Ibn Isḥāq said: It reached me that cavalry appeared while Mālik and his companions were on the pass. He said to his companions: “What do you see?” They said: “We see people resting their spears between the ears of their horses, their valley being long.” He said: “These are Banū Sulaym, and there is no harm to you from them.” When they approached, they took the bottom of the valley. Then another group of cavalry appeared following them. He said to his companions: “What do you see?” They said: “We see people with spears laid across, without reins on their horses.” He said: “These are the Aws and the Khazraj, and there is no harm to you from them.” When they reached the foot of the pass, they took the path of Banū Sulaym. Then a rider appeared. He said to his companions: “What do you see?” They said: “We see a tall rider, with his spear on his shoulder, his head wrapped in a red cloak.” He said: “This is al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām, and I swear by al-Lāt that he will engage you, so stand firm against him.” When al-Zubayr reached the foot of the pass, he saw the group and charged at them, and he kept thrusting at them until he dislodged them from it. Ibn Isḥāq said: When God Almighty routed the polytheists from the people of Ḥunayn and gave the Messenger of God ﷺ power over them, a woman among the Muslim women ؓ said, about them: The cavalry of God has overcome the cavalry of al-Lāt, And God is more deserving of steadfastness. It is also related: And His cavalry is more deserving of steadfastness. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar added: We have the water of Ḥunayn, so leave it; If you drink from it, you will not prevail over it. This is the Messenger of God; you will not overcome him. And the Messenger of God ﷺ returned from the direction of the polytheists, after their rout, to the camp, and ordered that everyone who could be caught be killed, and those of the Muslims who had fled returned. Mention of the number of polytheists killed The killing intensified among Thaqīf in Banū Mālik, and seventy men of them were killed under their banner, among them ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith. Their banner was with Dhū al-Khimār, and when he was killed, ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd Allāh took it up and fought until he was killed. When news of his killing reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, he said: “May God distance him, for he used to hate Quraysh.” Al-Bayhaqī related from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith, from his father, who said: “As many of the people of al-Ṭāʾif were killed on the day of Ḥunayn as were killed on the day of Badr.”
