The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)
Translation
✧ Mention of the intention of al-Naḍīr b. al-Ḥārith to assassinate the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the signs that occurred in that Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Shuraḥbīl al-ʿAbdarī narrated to us from his father, who said: Al-Naḍīr was one of the most forbearing men of Quraysh. He used to say: Praise be to Allah who honored us with Islam and favored us with Muḥammad ﷺ, and we did not die upon what the forefathers died upon. Then he mentioned a lengthy ḥadīth, then he said: I went out with a group of Quraysh who were still upon their religion—Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb, Ṣafwān b. Umayya, and Suhayl b. ʿAmr—and we intended, if there was a defeat against Muḥammad, to raid him along with those who raid. When the two parties came in sight of each other and we were in the sector of the polytheists, Hawāzin launched a single charge, and we thought that the Muslims would never recover from it, while we were with them and I intended against Muḥammad what I intended. I made for him, and there he was in the faces of the polytheists, standing on a gray mule, around him men with white faces. I came toward him, and they shouted at me: "Back!" So my heart was terrified and my limbs trembled. I said: This is like the day of Badr. The man is surely upon truth, and he is divinely protected. Allah Almighty cast Islam into my heart and changed it from what I had intended. It was not even the time of milking a she-camel before the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made a true charge, and the Anṣār called out among themselves: "The charge after the flight: O Khazraj, O Khazraj!" They crushed us utterly, scattered our assembly, and our affair dispersed, each man's concern being himself. I withdrew amid the dust of the people until I descended into one of the valleys of Awṭās and hid in the thicket of a tree where no one would find me unless Allah Almighty guided him to me. I remained there for days, and terror did not leave me because of what I had seen. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on to al-Ṭāʾif and stayed as long as he stayed, then returned to al-Jiʿrāna. I said: If only I could go to al-Jiʿrāna, approach the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and enter into what the Muslims have entered. What he has done remains, and I have seen lessons. Islam has settled firmly, no one remains, and the Arabs and non-Arabs have submitted to Muḥammad ﷺ. The might of Muḥammad is might for us, and his honor is honor for us. By Allah, while I was in that state, I was not aware until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me at al-Jiʿrāna, face to face. He said: "Al-Naḍīr?" I said: "At your service." He said: "This is better for you than what you intended on the day of Ḥunayn, from which Allah came between you and it." I came to him quickly, and he said: "It is time for you to see clearly what you are in. Be at ease." I said: I see that if there were with Allah Almighty any god other than Him, he would have availed something. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that you are the Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Allah, increase him in steadfastness." Al-Naḍīr said: By the One who sent him with the truth, my heart became like a rock in steadfastness in the religion and insight into the truth. And he mentioned the ḥadīth.
