The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)
ذِكْرُ نَهْيِهِ ﷺ عَنْ قَتْلِ النِّسَاءِ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ رَوَى الْإِمَامُ أَحْمَدُ، وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ عَنْ رَبَاحِ بْنِ رَبِيعٍ ؓ أَنَّهُ خَرَجَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةٍ غَزَاهَا وَعَلَى مُقَدِّمَتِهِ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، فَمَرَ رَبَاحٌ وَأَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ مَقْتُولَةٍ مِمَّا أَصَابَتِ الْمُقَدِّمَةَ، فَوَقَفُوا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيْهَا، يَعْنِي وَيَعْجَبُونَ مَنْ خَلْقِهَا - حَتَّى لَحِقَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ، فَانْفَرَجُوا عَنْهَا. فَوَقَفَ عَلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: «مَا كَانَتْ هَذِهِ لِتُقَاتِلَ” فَقَالَ لِأَحَدِهِمْ: «الْحَقْ خَالِدًا وَقُلْ لَهُ لَا تَقْتُلْ ذُرِّيَّةً وَلَا عَسِيفًا.
Translation
✧ Mention of His ﷺ Prohibition of Killing Women on the Day of Ḥunayn Imām Aḥmad and Abū Dāwūd narrated from Rabāḥ b. Rabīʿ ؓ that he went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on an expedition he undertook, with Khālid b. al-Walīd at the head of his vanguard. Rabāḥ and the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a slain woman whom the vanguard had killed. They stopped and looked at her, meaning they marveled at her form—until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught up with them on his riding camel, and they parted from around her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped over her and said: “This one was not one to fight.” Then he said to one of them: “Catch up with Khālid and tell him: Do not kill a child or a hired servant.”
