The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)

Translation

✧ Mention of the verse regarding the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when it was said to him that Hawāzin had advanced. From Sahl b. al-Ḥanẓaliyyah ؓ that they marched with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Ḥunayn, and they prolonged the march until, when it was the evening of the ẓuhr prayer time in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a horseman came and said: O Messenger of Allah, I went ahead of you until I ascended such-and-such a mountain, and there was Hawāzin, who had come with all their might, with their women, their cattle, and their sheep; they had gathered. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said: "That is spoil for the Muslims tomorrow, if Allah Almighty wills." Then he said: "Who will guard us tonight?" Anas b. Abī Marthad said: I will, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Then mount." So he mounted a horse of his and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Face this mountain pass until you are at its top, and let us not be raided from your direction tonight." When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to his prayer place and prayed two rakʿahs, then said: "Have you sensed your horseman?" They said: O Messenger of Allah, we have not sensed him. Then he called to prayer, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to pray while turning toward the mountain pass, until when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer he said: "Rejoice, for your horseman has come to you." He began to look through the gaps in the trees in the pass, and there he was, having come until he stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: I went ahead until I was at the top of this pass where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me, and when morning came I ascended both passes and looked, but I saw no one. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Did you dismount tonight?" He said: No, except to pray or to relieve myself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "You have made it obligatory, so it does not matter if you do no other deed after it." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī. .
