The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)
Translation
✧ Mention of the saying of some of those who had recently accepted Islam, while still close to the era of ignorance: “Make for us a Dhāt Anwāṭ” Ibn Isḥāq, al-Tirmidhī—who declared it authentic—al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Abī Ḥātim narrated from Abū Qatādah al-Ḥārith b. Mālik ؓ that he said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Ḥunayn—while we were recently out of the era of ignorance—and we traveled with him to Ḥunayn. The disbelievers of Quraysh and other Arabs besides them had a great tree—and according to al-Ḥākim in al-Iklīl, a green lote tree—called “Dhāt Anwāṭ,” to which they came every year, hung their weapons upon it, sacrificed beside it, and devoted themselves to it for a day. While we were traveling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we saw a great green lote tree, and we called out to one another from the sides of the road: O Messenger of Allah, make for us a “Dhāt Anwāṭ” just as they have a “Dhāt Anwāṭ.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah is most great, Allah is most great, Allah is most great. You have said—by the One in whose hand is my soul—just as the people of Mūsā said to Mūsā: ‘Make for us a god just as they have gods.’ He said: ‘You are a people who are ignorant’ [al-Aʿrāf 138]. These are indeed ways; you will surely follow the ways of those before you, exactly like one feather of an arrow matches another.”
