The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)
ذِكْرُ اسْتِعْمَالِهِ ﷺ عَتَّابَ بْنَ أَسِيدٍ أَمِيرًا عَلَى مَكَّةَ وَمُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ ؓ مُعَلِّمًا لِأَهْلِهَا قَالُوا: لَمَّا بَلَغَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَبَرُ هَوَازِنَ وَمَا عَزَمُوا عَلَيْهِ أَرَادَ التَّوَجُّهَ لِقِتَالِهِمْ، وَاسْتَخْلَفَ عَتَّابَ بْنَ أَسِيدٍ أَمِيرًا عَلَى أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ، وَمُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ يُعَلِّمُهُمُ السُّنَنَ وَالْفِقْهَ، وَكَانَ عُمْرُ عَتَّابٍ إِذْ ذَاكَ قَرِيبًا مَنْ عِشْرِينَ سَنَةً.
Translation
✧ Mention of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointing ʿAttāb b. Asīd as governor over Makkah and Muʿādh b. Jabal ؓ as a teacher for its people They said: When the news of Hawāzin and what they had resolved upon reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he wanted to set out to fight them. He appointed ʿAttāb b. Asīd as governor over the people of Makkah, and Muʿādh b. Jabal to teach them the sunan and fiqh. At that time, ʿAttāb's age was close to twenty years.
