The Conquest of Makkah

Translation

✧ The Islam of Hind bt. ʿUtbah and the signs that occurred in that regard ؓ On the authority of ʿĀʾishah ؓ who said: Hind bt. ʿUtbah said: O Messenger of Allah, there was no tent on the face of the earth—or she said: among the people of a tent—whose people I wished to be humiliated more than the people of your tent. Then, as of today, there is no tent on the face of the earth—or she said: among the people of a tent—whose people I love to be honored more than the people of a tent—or she said: your tent. Related by the two Shaykhs. And Muḥammad b. ʿUmar related from ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—may Allah Almighty have mercy on him—who said: I heard a female client of Marwān b. al-Ḥakam say: I heard Hind bt. ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah say, while mentioning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: I opposed him with all enmity, and on the day of Uḥud I did what I did of mutilation to his uncle and his companions. Whenever Quraysh dispatched an expedition, I was with them in person or as a supporter of Quraysh, until I would aid everyone who raided Muḥammad, to the point that I stripped off my clothes. Then I saw in a dream for three consecutive nights after the conquest of Makkah: I saw as though I was in darkness, unable to see a plain or a mountain, and I saw that darkness split open for me with a light like the sun, and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ calling me. Then I saw on the second night as though I was on a road, and he was calling me, and there was Hubal on my right calling me, and Isāf on my left calling me, and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in front of me saying: "Come to the road." Then I saw on the third night as though I was standing at the edge of Hell, and they wanted to push me into it, and there was Hubal saying: Put her into it. So I turned and looked at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ behind me holding my clothes, and I moved away from the edge of the Fire, and I no longer saw the Fire. So I was alarmed and said: What is this? And it became clear to me. So I went early that very hour to an idol in a house over which we used to place a cloth, and I took an adze and began to chop it to pieces, saying: How long we were in delusion because of you. And I embraced Islam. And he also related from ʿAbd Allah b. al-Zubayr ؓ that Hind came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at al-Abṭaḥ, and she embraced Islam, and said: Praise be to Allah who made manifest the religion He chose for Himself, that your mercy may touch me, O Muḥammad. I am a woman who believes in Allah and affirms Him. Then she uncovered her face-veil and said: I am Hind bt. ʿUtbah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Welcome to you." She said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, there was no household on the face of the earth whose people I loved to be humiliated more than your household, and now I have become such that there is no household on earth whose people I love to be honored more than your household. And he also related from Abū Ḥuṣayn al-Hudhalī who said: When Hind bt. ʿUtbah embraced Islam, she sent a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—while he was at al-Abṭaḥ—with a female client of hers, consisting of two kids roasted on hot stones. The girl reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: My mistress sent you this gift, and she apologizes to you and says: Our sheep today are few in offspring. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "May Allah bless your sheep for you and increase their offspring." The female client used to say: We saw of the abundance of our sheep and their offspring what we had not seen before or recently. Hind would say: This is by the supplication of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then she would say: I used to see in a dream that I was always standing in the sun, and the shade was near me but I could not reach it. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew near, I saw as though I entered the shade.
