Translation

✧ THE ISLAM OF ṢAFWĀN B. UMAYYAH ؓ Ibn Isḥāq narrated from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, and al-Bayhaqī from al-Zuhrī, and Muḥammad b. ʿUmar from his shaykhs; they said: Ṣafwān b. Umayyah went out intending Jeddah, to embark from there to Yemen. ʿUmayr b. Wahb said: O Prophet of Allah, Ṣafwān b. Umayyah is the chief of my people and he has gone out fleeing from you, to cast himself into the sea. So grant him security, may Allah bless you and grant you peace. He said: "He is secure." ʿUmayr went out until he caught up with him — while he was intending to board the sea — and Ṣafwān said to his slave Yasār — and no one else was with him — Woe to you! Look whom you see. He said: This is ʿUmayr b. Wahb. Ṣafwān said: What do I do with ʿUmayr b. Wahb? By Allah, he has not come except wanting to kill me; he has sided with Muḥammad against me. Then he caught up with him and said: O Abū Wahb, may I be made your ransom, I have come from the most dutiful of people and the most maintaining of ties of people. May my father and mother be your ransom; fear Allah, fear Allah for your own self, that you would destroy it. This is a guarantee of security from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; I have brought it to you. He said: Woe to you, go away from me and do not speak to me. He said: O Ṣafwān, may my father and mother be your ransom. The most excellent of people, the most dutiful of people, and the best of people is your paternal cousin. His might is your might, his honor is your honor, and his dominion is your dominion. He said: I fear him for myself. He said: He is more forbearing than that and more generous. He said: And I will not return with you until you bring me a sign that I recognize. So he said: Stay in your place until I bring it to you. ʿUmayr returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Ṣafwān refused to feel at ease with me until he sees from you a token that he recognizes. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took off his turban and gave it to him — it was the burd with which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had entered, wrapping it around his head, a striped burd. Then Ṣafwān returned with him until he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was praying the afternoon prayer with the Muslims in the mosque. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said the salutation, Ṣafwān cried out: O Muḥammad, ʿUmayr b. Wahb came to me with your burd and claimed that you invited me to come to you. So if you are pleased with a matter, then good; otherwise you would send me away for two months. He said: "Dismount, Abū Wahb." He said: No, by Allah, not until it becomes clear to me. He said: "Rather, you shall have a departure of four months." So Ṣafwān dismounted. And when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to Hawāzin and distributed their spoils, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw Ṣafwān looking at a mountain path full of camels, sheep, and shepherds. He kept looking at it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was watching him. He said: "O Abū Wahb, does this mountain path please you?" He said: Yes. He said: "It is yours and what is in it." So Ṣafwān took possession of what was in the mountain path. And at that he said: No one's soul has been so pleased with the like of this except the soul of a prophet. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muḥammad is His servant and His messenger. And he embraced Islam on the spot.
