Translation
✧ The Islam of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā ؓ Muḥammad b. ʿUmar related from his shaykhs, saying: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā fled to Najrān, and Ḥassān b. Thābit ؓ sent verses with which he meant Ibn al-Zibaʿrā: Do not think that a man whose hatred has lodged you in Najrān, in a mean and cut-off life, is safe. Your spear-shaft has been worn out in wars and found to be weak, defective, and full of blemishes. The wrath of God is upon al-Zibaʿrā and his son, and an evil punishment abides in this life. Ibn Isḥāq mentioned only the first verse. When Ḥassān's poetry reached Ibn al-Zibaʿrā, he went out to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was sitting among his companions. When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw him, he said: "This is Ibn al-Zibaʿrā, and with him is a face in which there is the light of Islam." When he stood before the Messenger of God ﷺ he said: Peace be upon you, O Messenger of God. I bear witness that there is no god but God and that you are His servant and His Messenger. Praise be to God who has guided me to Islam. I opposed you, gathered men against you, rode horse and camel, and walked on my own two feet in enmity toward you. Then I fled from you to Najrān, intending never to accept Islam at all. Then God increased me in good from it, cast it into my heart, and made it beloved to me. And I remembered the misguidance I had been in, and the following of what is not proper, of a stone to which sacrifice is made and which is worshipped, that does not know who worships it and who does not worship it. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Praise be to God who has guided you to Islam. Indeed Islam cuts off what came before it.” And ʿAbd Allāh said when he became Muslim: O Messenger of the King, my tongue is a mender of what it tore when I was tried, when I vied with Satan in the ways of error, and whoever inclines as he inclines is destroyed. I have made my flesh and bones believe in my Lord, then my witnessing heart: you are the warner. Truly I am a restrainer from you, then greeting the tribe of Luʾayy, and all of them are deluded. And ʿAbd Allāh also said when he became Muslim: Anxieties and sorrows have kept sleep away, and the night is dark and tangled in its curtains, because of what came to me, that Aḥmad blamed me in it, so I spent the night as if fevered. O best of those whom a strong she-camel, swift of forelegs and unsparing, carried on her joints, I am one who apologizes to you for what I committed when I wandered in error, In the days when Sahm commanded me to the most misguided course, and Makhzūm commanded me to it, And I extended the ropes of destruction, and the affair of the slanderers led me, and their affair is ill-omened. Today my heart believes in the Prophet Muḥammad, and the one who errs in this is deprived. Enmity has passed and its causes are cut off, and bonds between us and forbearance have called. So forgive, may my two parents be your ransom, my slip, for you are merciful and shown mercy. And upon you, from the knowledge of the King, there is a mark: a shining light and a sealed seal. He gave you, after love, His proof as an honor, and the proof of God is mighty. And I have testified that your religion is true and right, and that you are great among the servants. And God bears witness that Aḥmad is chosen, honored and received among the righteous. A chief whose structure is lofty from Hāshim, a branch firmly set in the heights and roots. Ibn Hishām said: And some of the people of knowledge of poetry deny these verses as his. I say: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā al-Sahmī was one of the greatest enemies of Islam, and among the poets who employed their powers in satirizing the Muslims. Then God bestowed upon him repentance, turning back, and returning to Islam, and undertaking its support and defense.
