The Conquest of Makkah

Translation

✧ His ﷺ command to remove the images from the House before entering it Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Saʿd, and Muḥammad b. ʿUmar narrated—and the wording is his—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb—while he was at al-Baṭḥāʾ—to go to the Kaʿbah and erase every image in it. He did not enter it until the images were erased. ʿUmar had left the image of Ibrāhīm. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered, he saw the image of Ibrāhīm and said: “O ʿUmar, did I not command you not to leave any image in it? May Allah fight them! They made him an old man casting lots with divining arrows.” Then he saw the image of Maryam and said: “Erase whatever images are in it. May Allah fight a people who depict what they do not create.” Al-Bukhārī narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ, and Ibn Abī Shaybah from ʿIkrimah, that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Makkah he refused to enter the House while the deities—meaning the idols—were in it. He commanded that they be removed. There was an image of Ibrāhīm and Ismāʿīl with divining arrows in their hands. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “May Allah fight them! They knew that the two never cast lots with them ever.” Ibn Abī Shaybah added: Then he commanded that a cloth be wetted and with it he erased their image. And in Ibn Abī Shaybah's report from Ibn ʿUmar: The Muslims stripped down to their waist-wrappers, took buckets, and fell upon Zamzam, washing the Kaʿbah, its outside and inside. They did not leave any trace of the polytheists but erased it and washed it away. Section In the account is that the Prophet ﷺ entered the House and prayed in it, and he did not enter it until the images were erased from it. In this is evidence of the dislike of praying in a place with images, and this is more deserving of dislike than praying in a bathhouse, because the dislike of praying in a bathhouse is either because it is a place where impurity is suspected, or because it is a house of devils—and that is the correct view—whereas a place of images is a place where polytheism is suspected. Most of the polytheism of the nations came from images and graves.
