The Conquest of Makkah
الْآيَةِ فِي رَفْعِهِ ﷺ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ - لِإِلْقَاءِ صَنَمِ قُرَيْشٍ رَوَى ابْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَالْحَاكِمُ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ؓ قَالَ: انْطَلَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى أَتَى بِي الْكَعْبَةَ، فَقَالَ: «اجْلِسْ” فَجَلَسْتُ بِجَنْبِ الْكَعْبَةِ، فَصَعِدَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى مَنْكِبِي فَقَالَ: «انْهَضْ” فَنَهَضْتُ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى ضَعْفِي تَحْتَهُ قَالَ: «اجْلِسْ” فَجَلَسْتُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «يَا عَلِيُّ، اصْعَدْ عَلَى مَنْكِبِي” فَفَعَلْتُ، فَلَمَّا نَهَضَ بِي خُيِّلَ إِلَيَّ لَوْ شِئْتُ نِلْتُ أُفُقَ السَّمَاءِ، فَصَعِدْتُ فَوْقَ الْكَعْبَةِ، وَتَنَحَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: «أَلْقِ صَنَمَهُمُ الْأَكْبَرَ” وَكَانَ مِنْ نُحَاسٍ مُوَتَّدٍ بِأَوْتَادٍ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «عَالِجْهُ” وَيَقُولُ لِي: «إِيهْ إِيهْ” «جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَاطِلُ إِنَّ الْبَاطِلَ كَانَ زَهُوقًا”. فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أُعَالِجُهُ حَتَّى اسْتَمْكَنْتُ مِنْهُ
Translation
✧ The verse regarding his ﷺ lifting ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ to cast down the idol of Quraysh. Ibn Abī Shaybah and al-Ḥākim related from ʿAlī ؓ, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out until he brought me to the Kaʿbah and said, “Sit.” So I sat beside the Kaʿbah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ climbed onto my shoulder and said, “Rise.” So I rose, and when he saw my weakness beneath him, he said, “Sit.” So I sat. Then he said, “O ʿAlī, climb onto my shoulder.” So I did, and when he rose with me, it seemed to me that if I wished I could reach the horizon of the sky. So I climbed atop the Kaʿbah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved aside and said, “Cast down their greatest idol.” It was made of brass, fastened with iron pegs to the ground. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Wrestle with it,” saying to me, “Eh, eh: ‘The truth has come and falsehood has vanished; indeed falsehood is ever vanishing’” [Q 17:81]. I kept wrestling with it until I gained mastery over it.
